Megaman's creator, Kenji Infune recently announced his new project on Kickstarter. Mighty No. 9 is a game that's meant to take you back to action gaming roots... Okay it's essentially a new Megaman styled game. :P

This seems awesome, though, and there is even a character design contest going on, similar to the robot master design contests held throughout the Megaman series. You can find the kickstarter page here:

As cool as this is, it's sad knowing Megaman's truly dead...r.i.p. Blue Bomber ;_; (Because after this, chances are that if Crapcom makes Megaman 11 it'd feature an emo bent on saving the world by shoryukening zombie armies, only on Android~)

They already took the series in a balls bad direction with Megaman XOver. That and the cancellation of Megaman Legends 3 makes me feel kind of heartbroken with Capcom. Their games were so good in the past, and wasn't Megaman kind of like their mascot?
It's weird/shitty how trends have changed so radically. It's like they won't make new games unless every fan calls in to sign up and give them money first.

Oh, how Capcom treats its mascots~ :3

It's the equivalent of "1000 likes for the next episode" for them. Although it is a good strategy to measure your audience for potential profit and budgeting, it seems Capcom just wants people to talk about them as long as possible and once people stop showing hype they interpret it as a sign that there is no interest and then they drop it and blame the fans for not staying at super hype levels throughout the whole development process.

what a load of bullshit

Yes that is. There is even a facebook page devoted to more than 3 thousand fans dedicated to bringing back MML3. The real reason was pretty much disinterest by the execs at capcom.

Also guys, you DO realize this is being developed by Kenji's own company and not Capcom, right? He left Capcom a while ago.

Maybe because he knew it was going to go downhill...
Yeah he produced an interview that was translated by NeoGAF or something.
Well, I will say, this will probably be better than what Capcom will give us as the next Megaman (if that ever happens)

Has the trend really changed that much? I think that was just a case of the companies insisting on mass appeal games and that's hardly something new. The reason they wanted an unreasonable fan support for Megaman Legends 3 is probably because the earlier two titles weren't mass appeal, so they needed to be convinced MML 3 will sell much better, which I don't think would be the case.
Like it or not, Megaman's pretty niche. Pretty much only its established fanbase will get the games, and today's environment is not really good for expanding something in its style. And it's not a huge icon like Sonic, where the established fanbase is enough to make the franchise economically viable. In my opinion, at this time, Megaman would be in better hands in a small indie studio than a big publisher like Capcom. Hell, it can even be said it's a burden for Capcom. Even if t's on the same scale, a game costs much more to make by a big ass studio, with all the extra people and paperwork.

You know what really excites me about this one? The concept art of Beck actually changed to reflect his new powers. Instead of simply getting recolored, like Megaman, he actually changes into a form suitable for his new power. And supposedly you'll be able to temporarily copy powers from stage enemies, instead of just bosses. The form shenanigans entertain me.

And of course, it was only a matter of time until someone made a Mighty No. ⑨ parody.
Good going, Kenji. Finally doing something about being treated like shit for a company you gave a quarter century to.

I’m just going to pretend that I live in an alternate reality that Infune still works for Capcom and this is like playing another side series to the original Mega Man, like when I first played the X series back then, and just think of it as another Mega Man type of game.

Seriously, that’s how I’m going to think of it. As much as it’s sad that Crapcom has pretty much scrapped everything Mega Man as of late (except for his appearance in Smash), at least I can sleep at night knowing that his creator still cares about him in some way and is deciding to take matters into his own hands.

Besides, this looks absolutely fantastic!

(...So this is the “special project” that got Infune fired from Capcom that he wanted to do? Pfft...)

He didn't get fired, he quit. He spent years at Capcom not getting to do anything interesting because the only projects they would approve were sequels. After getting his pitch for Lost Planet denied, he developed a working demo in secret, and after it was revealed the execs basically had no choice but to let it go through. Capcom had become a stagnant environment, not willing to take any risks and simply pushing for easy money with rehashes of rehashes. After suffering from this pressure for years, Megaman Legends 3 getting cancelled for god knows what reason was the final straw. He ragequit Capcom. I don't blame him at all.
I'm glad Kenji doesn't have his head up his ass like basically all of Capcom right now.

Looking forward to this.
I hope this one has a good turn out....
The thing is that no one gave a crap about megaman games last gen. Now that he's "gone", everyone goes apeshit. Sales of MMX 7 & 8 and Megaman Network Transmission were VERY poor. Or how many here got those?
Only GBA games sold relatively well.

So no wonder we're not seeing new proper next-gen megamans..

although I admit it's a shame capcom isn't releasing portable megamans anymore neither. New chapters of Megaman.exe would be nice..
I'd like a proper closure for MMZ :<

We can all dream of the day Capcom will care about Megaman anymore.

By the way, this kickstarter seems to be doing pretty well. They've already reached their 2 million dollar goal. I'm highly anticipating Mighty No. 9 now. :D
