EXTRA-LIFE 2013: PLAY VIDEO GAMES FOR CHARITY!

Posts

pfft, you know I don't read things. Making assumptions is just so much more efficient.
Speed Demos Archive have done similar events for several years now and with great success.

As far as I can tell, the livestreaming was Pepsi's idea and isn't part of the charity.

Totally my idea.

Their marathons are awesome! They do more of a telethon type of thing though, taking callers reading off donation comments and stuff. I guess the nice thing about extra-life is that they don't require you to travel anywhere, and you can kind of make up your own little rules for the event, or invite friends over, etc. It doesn't really matter how you do it, as long as you play games!
I'm totally going to watch this :D Be sure to try my games while you're at it.
Awesome / Summer Games Done Quick (the SDA+SRL speed run marathons) don't take people phoning in but people can attach comments to their donations which get read off as long as they're in good taste and time permits. In addition to having your comment read on stream there's various donation incentives such as donation goals to play an additional game, a played game but with a different category (like Any%), do something extra in a game (Super Metroid kill or save the creatures is big for this), or simple stuff like naming characters or filenames. Try to work some inexpensive donation incentives into your stream or how you plan it out, like the Lets Tries you mentioned.

Definitely! Let me know which one to play! I'm not 100% sure how I'm going to do the format yet, but I'll probably play each game for about an hour a piece (depending on how good the game is or how short it is). This is my tentative list so far:

Last Scenario, Exit Fate, Hero's Realm, The Way, Lightprism (it's awesome), fey, & various other games on my subscription list.

I added some helpful links about extra-life to the first post, since I guess some people don't know how to google!

@GreatRedSpirit: Whoops, yeah. I meant that. Trying to respond to too many things at once, haha. Incentives are a nice idea, but I almost think it goes without saying that if you donate some money, and want me to play your game, I will be more than happy to do so.
Both of my games are only about an hour long, so that's perfect!

Take your pick from either A Wizard's Quest or Doggie Dayz.
Well I already tried Doggie Dayz a few weeks ago, so I'll probably try out A Wizard's Quest!
Hero's Realm is about 25 hours long! Perfect fit.
Great! But be sure to save playing it until much later. I have school :/

So you're going to like play only the first hour of each game in your tentative list?
I would say it's a loose rule, but yes, I'd like to stick to that timeframe so I'm not playing one game the whole time. :) The event is still 2 months away, so the only thing set in stone is that I will play games for 25 hours on Nov 2!
I will stream. I guess whoever donates the most to RMN gets to pick whatever RM game I play or something. I'm thinking maybe playing a class based game like HR and letting a donor decide which classes I play.

But uh, given that this is probably smaller than the awesome SDA events, who knows.

You don't get charity, do you?
Uh. Maybe not? I'm pretty sure the point of the charity is to donate money to save kids, right?

The game-playing has no correlation to this. It's completely separated from the charity. There's no link at all between the game-playing and the charity, except that the same website says to do both of them. Nothing about donating money to this cause actually gives anyone any reason to play games. And nothing about playing games gives anyone any reason to donate money to this cause.

So, apparently with 5 minutes of thought, I was able to do a better job of linking the two ideas than the creators of the charity were, and create an extra incentive for people to donate at the same time. I somehow don't feel bad about this?

But he's right. Unfortunately, I poor as well, and don't understand how Paypal works (I got the account verified and everything, but it doesn't appear to understand that you can draw straight from my bank account instead of what seems to require transferring money onto my card).

This is the way a charity like this normally works.

Neither I, the game donator, nor the game tester fronts money (we're handling the event). Instead we get many many third parties to agree something like $10 per hour played. The small hourly donation is to find more people to pledge, and it does in fact add up. If for instance he plays my game 25 straight hours, the charity is donated $250 per pledger. Just ten guys becomes $2500 easy money.

I will be doing RM related events and just gaming.

Some options I'm considering doing:

A. a 25 hour game or chaingame with other participants
B. Playing through RM games that people vote on (I'll do commentary as well)
C. Just playing random games I have in my library. :)
D. Doing simple art requests for donators (sketch only)

I might end up joining team RMN, we'll see ;p

Awesome! I'll add you both to the list!
Poop, I need to contact support to join Team RMN. I will let you know if this is successful or not.

I will play RM games too, but I'll pull it from a hat to make it fair :)

Not to give anything away, but I plan on being part of two teams! You'll see how ;)
I've donated 25.00 to your noble cause comrade!

I know nothing is set in stone at this point other than streaming for 25 hours on November 2nd. But if you're planning on sticking to the 1 hour per game format could you add either, Name73, Origin, Oathguard or the recently released Phantom Legacy to the list?

I'll probably have to scrounge up a link for the first two.
Thanks LordBlueRouge!! I'll add those games to the list too.
