OUYA - WORTH IT?
Posts
I am (and remain) intrigued by the OUYA. An Android console for the TV, with a built-in devkit functionality, all the games are free (to try, or demo, or has microtransactions or straight-up just free), emulators (whoo!) and all for $100. Plus I heard that the PS3 controller can work for it.
But haven't used one, tried one, or even seen one in person. I have zero practical experience with this (and tbh I don't even know if or which stores nearby carry them! if any).
I stumbled across an OUYA review by Blunty which is quite excellent.
Chronoblade looks like a lot of fun. And emulators. Not gonna lie, this is a big motivator for mebecause I have no integrity and will be playing NES and SNES games I don't own.
Anywho, I was wondering if any of you out there have any experience with the system? Or developing for the system?
I am thinking this as being the "big" Christmas gift for the family (mostly myself).

As a developer Kickstarter backer, I've had one since December (shameless plug: one of our games, The Vestibule, was a launch title). There's not really a whole lot to say about it. It's exactly what it says on the tin: a $99 Android console that's free and easy to develop for. You can play lots of indie games on the cheap and you can emulate pretty much everything.
There's nothing wrong with the Ouya, but at the same time, there's nothing amazing about it. I would say it's exactly the right price for what it is. If it's the kind of thing that interests you, you'll be content. If not, you'll probably find it kind of pointless.
Developing for it is a dream. I personally use Monogame, but plenty of other engines, including Unity (the free version, even) easily deploy to it. There's very little barrier to entry.
Also, TowerFall is a blast.

The Ouya is alright. Heroes of Umbra is probably the best game I've seen on it. Android's (and more specifically, ouya's) lack of decent RPGs sort of disappoints me, but I think that'll change in time.
I kickstarted the console when it was announced, and it was actually what really got me going with Heroes of Umbra. For what you pay, it's a fun little device. Developing for it is an absolute breeze (I'm not even using their SDK) as it's basically a low-tier phone.
Even though there's a clear lack of polish in both the company and the games, I feel like there's an opportunity to fill a void many gamers have. It will just take some time.

My mates got one, it's not bad. It basically is what it says it is, not much has come from it so far but like DHM said, just give it time. If you're wanting to get in on developing for it then most definitely get it.
I liked it but wasn't overly impressed by it as it is now. Great idea though the Ouya.

What is a PS Vita TV? Also, keep in mind have zero nostalgia factor for anything PS, because I didn't own one until I got a PS3, and even then I only really played Rock Band and blurays.
If you already have a smartphone, and do some End User License Agreement breaking changes, or just have an Android, you can save $100 by not buying an OUYA. Current Android phones can use 3rd party controllers, and Apple is adding them in the next iOS. Both types of smartphones can already plug into a tv with a mini-HDMI or USB cable, so you're not getting much out of the OUYA except an Android without a phone function. Plus I've heard the pre-packaged controller is terrible.
Here's a review pointing out the negative qualities of the OUYA, and telling you how to use a phone to do the same: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/ways-ouya-console-failed,review-1881.html

PS Vita TV is a console with which you can play PSP, PSX and PS Vita games on TV with a dual shock controller. So pretty much like Ouya except for PSP, PSX and PS Vita games rather than Android.
It also has much more features, wait, I'll google it for you since I'm nice today:

Anyway, I really can't recommend the Ouya at this point anymore.
1. The staff is really incompetent. Not only that many of the backers didn't even get their console by now, they also allowed a lot of scams and scandals without even giving any statement on them, just ignoring they are there. Also their support hardly ever replies and there are high waiting times. There are many technical problems with the console and the people don't get any help.
2. There are hardly any good games for the console and competent developers actually started to remove their games from the console due to the scandals above.
You can for example read about it here:

I'm not the only person who doesn't like Persona?
PSX - Has over 50 great must-have RPGs...
PSP - I know many I want to have but couldn't get so far because I don't like handhelds. The Star Ocean 1 remake for starters. All the old FF remakes with updated graphics. The Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky is also said to be pretty awesome. Oh and of course Riviera! Best training battle music ever. And many more.
PS Vita - Pretty new console still, Ragnarok Odyssey is the first game I'd get for it, I guess.

Regarding PSX must have RPGs, I played Disgaea on the DS, it was okay. FFT was tedious, though. And I heard that heroes are OP in that game, which lessens the appeal (I like managing classes and teams and whatnot). I already have FF7 on PC. What else is there?
