I voted for Other and want a Open Theme just centered on something Halloween or spooky or ghostly or something. Having at least 3 themes to choose from wouldn't be too bad either.
we got five to choose from!

louiscyphre and i are going to do monster horror. survival attack. whatever. and it will be better than dragon's descendants I SWEAR (hey remember wine and roses yeah okay pretend that was my latest game)

...now i just need to finish my current project in the next few days so I can do THIS game lololoilaksfl.d,mng.as

Oops, yes, yes we do.

This is a something I just assumed, but we don't have to use RPG Maker for this do we? (ie. it's okay to use other engines?) Answer is in progress.

There are gems all the time imho. They're not polished but it does get creative juices flowing.

Always the optimist, LockeZ! While I do agree with you to a certain extent regarding the quality issue, I also agree with everyone else that they're exercises worth doing. They usually provide developers with another side project to work towards, which is, good overall for them, in terms of giving them a break from their main concerns as well as providing a venue for branching out artistically. Thus, if you don't believe in them, don't sign up but applaud the efforts of those who do as rough around the edges as they might be (most of them are usually better than that).

I certainly hope it's not just RPG Maker. I never get to do events because of my engine. My engine was one of the first engines on RMN, and glory days and put the torch back beneath the flame and all that!
@LockeZ
There's always the option of not playing any of them.

@Anaryu
I can't see why you would get the idea it would be RPGMaker only. I'm pretty sure it's not.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well, it's more that I'd rather the people who spend a month making an unplayable wreck of a contest game instead spend that month making 10% of a good game.

AND YET! I think I might actually enter this one? Maybe? I have a good functional enjoyable game system that isn't actually gonna get turned into a full-fledged game for a long time, so I might try to make something short out of it. Hopefully I don't pull a Wine & Roses and decide to abandon the original idea.
@LockeZ: People who create dysfunctional abominations will create dysfunctional abominations, regardless of whether contests exist or not.

I for one like it because it pushes people to at least try. And trying is not the easiest part. It also pushes people to actually finish something. And finishing is one of the hardest parts.

Because some of the prizes are sponsored by RMW. : )

You should always do what's best for the project - W&R got some pretty great reviews, so I'm going to assume he took it in the right direction. I'm not familiar with any drama about it, but even then, calling it out specifically seems a little... unnecessary?

Well for some it possible. Like putting the game story indoor then the outdoors, like a hunted house or something which for me it took only a single day to create 5-10 small room that is good without any mapping mistake. but it still depends. Well I suggest that next year the contest should start in September rather than October so developer have 2 month to work on their game.

Well I still going to join in since I could show some new RPG maker skills that I learn for the last year without working on a game for a year. (Currently the seven tower is still 4% complete I don't even know if I have to put it by part just to get the game release since the rewrite of the story is long than I imagine.)

I voted on the poll, but I'm against event games existing. They always suck so bad. You can't make a game in a month. Or, at least, someone who's only working in their free time can't make a game worth playing in a month.

I wonder if we could do something else besides games for the event. Like, a single battle. Or a cut scene.

One of our most successful games ever (Finding Eden) was made for an event.

I know! And despite my earlier teasing, Wine & Roses, which was made for last year's Halloween event, is probably my favorite game on RMN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK ANY MORE

I think a month is just the right amount of time for an event. It enforces scope but still gives you enough time to iterate, test, and add some polish. Given unlimited time, it's so easy to fall into the trap of constantly increasing the scope of the game.

(guilty)
Hero's Realm was started as an entry to an event. So was Hellion, actually.

Come to think of it, most of my "successful" games were started as event entries. I should analyze why... (probably an increased focus and purposeful limiting of scope)
Almost all of my successful completed games were for events too. Demon's Gate was for a dungeon crawler contest on War of the Magi (old now defunct rm site) that blew out of scope, Altima for Action 52, RMN Bros... the only one that comes to mind that wasn't involved with an event was Moon Base Mario!

Clearly I need to get more involved in making games for events!
I'll be the other side of that coin, everything I've 'released' has been rubbish...and also for events. Who knows where my unreleased projects will land. Still I do enjoy me a good event, and I am looking forward to attempting to do something for this one.

I built WaR out of an older project's code called Promised Abyss. LockeZ -really- wanted that game to be made.
