I have tired to make some sprites before. They may look very crappy or not.

These are battle sprites.

Well, these are not TOO bad. I like the owl. ;P ...You seem to have a clear vision of what you want to portray but, you need to put a lot more attention to detail. It feels like you made these by drawing free-hand with your mouse, but that's not how pixel art has to be approached. You have to actually lay-down each pixel individually with extreme care, while still paying attention to the big picture so the lines flow naturally. It's a slow process, but if you have the dedication for it, it can be very rewarding.
One trick many people think is useful to start with pixel art is tracing art. Grab a drawing from the internet or draw one yourself and re-size it so it's the size of a sprite, then just trace over it using pixels. But remember, this is only for learning purposes. Don't go around stealing other peoples' work to make your own, or you're bound to get caught eventually. xD

If you're looking to practice pixel art then I don't know if I'd recommend starting off with bigger things like monsters. At least, that's not how I did it. I made tiles, then character sets, and only now have I started making monsters. When I did I started with something easy, like this:
This is just the circle tool in paint pretty much. I got it into the shape I wanted, then cleaned it up, applied the colour and finished up all the lines. Alterego's method of tracing a hand drawn image also works, that's what I did for this portrait, for example:
Drawing the pixels by hand in a rough shape is a valid way to do it, so long as you take the time to clean it up later. It's just like sketching a picture.
