Seems that Sony's taking a page out of Nintendo's book this time around. What I find interesting is that the PS3 was manufactured in Japan. Was this a deliberate decision designed to undercut the Xbox One?
Well, now we know where that $100 difference is coming from.

I wasn't gonna get a PS4 anyways, and to be honest, stuff like this doesn't really bother me. That's just the kind of shit that people get up to. I mean, I probably make use of stuff made by forced labour every day without realizing.
I dunno if I'll ever buy a PS4, but this is pretty gross. Foxconn is the manufacturer of an absolutely huge number of products for a bunch of major electronic corporations, and has had shoddy practices at best and downright disgusting ones at worst.
I don't want to sit back and say, "Welp, that sucks, but we can't do anything about it." At the same time, if you didn't want to indirectly support these kinds of business practices, you'd have to throw out all your electronics, live in a cabin in the woods, grow your own food and make your own clothes. So... what can we do?
The only thing I can think of is to talk about it, loudly, publicly, and let these businesses know that we're against it. I have no idea if that will ever do anything at all, but... oof. I just don't know. But it's better to stay informed and aware, anyway.

I wouldn't point the finger at Sony here. It's Foxconn's fault, since they're the ones actually manufacturing the product. This news is certainly sad/troubling, but it's not going to stop me from purchasing a PS4, since it's coming regardless of where it's being manufactured. This issue is really out of Sony's hands, although they could decide to switch manufacturers after this.
author=PepsiOtakuFoxconn has always been known to employ these practices - just look at the iPhone scandals. Make no mistake: that Sony switching to using Foxconn after using fair trade manufacturing for their previous console means they were well aware of what they were doing in order to save money on the bottom line and look like the "good guy" by offering their console cheaper than the Xbox One.

The only way to fight back against it would be to not buy the PS4. Continuing to buy it would just be telling them that it's okay.
The lack of outrage against this is just mind-boggling. The internet collectively blew a gasket over the Xbox One when it was announced to have DRM, but it's okay with the PS4 being manufactured using the blood of children?
I own a smartphone
I like to mix coke in my rum
I work in the oil and gas field
I live in Canada
Welp.
e: For reference, my approach has been "what has cool exclusives" with a hilarious mistake of trying a WiiU at launch. I can sit and wait for a long time to see what develops.

Foxconn is notorious. I read about that forced student labour "internships" when that story about the iphone (or ipad?) manufacturing broke out. But then I own a Samsung smartphone so it too was probably made on the backs of student slaves. (also, my wife works at the indian residential schools adjudication secretariat)
It took me a bit to remember find it but I think this article on the sequester earlier this year is a great example on what it takes to get people to do anything about bad shit.
spoilers the answer is it affects them directly

but then it can't benefit any of "those" people and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh

Whew! For a moment you almost made it sound like you're mad at something else and couldn't really care for the "blood of children". ;)
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Um
OK there's a difference between "this project is worth 6 college credit hours" and "FORCED CHILD SLAVE LABOR"
HOLY SHIT THIS HEADLINE IS A BLATANT LIE IN TWO DIFFERENT WAYS
these are adults who are getting college credit for this
In fact the only actual complaint in the article seems to be
hello I am a "computer technician" and my job is sit at the reception desk during the 7 hours a day that my boss is out of the office, to check items in that need fixing and deal with angry customers who have been waiting on their stuff for 2 months. Occasionally one of the items that gets checked in will be a computer and I will get to fix it!! that happened once last week and hasn't happened yet this week

Officially, the program is considered an “internship” and it is publicly recognized and promoted by the school. But students have said that once they got to Foxconn, they were assigned to jobs that had no relation whatsoever to their fields of study, including grunt work like distribution and shipping.which I dunno about you but this sounds exactly like every internship in existance everywhere in the world, and also a lot of other jobs

It does say "forced student labor", but the idea that the school is renting students out for manual labor unrelated to their degree is still pretty bogus... although that is uncannily common for internships, and not just in China.
I have a whole lot of words I could say about internships and especially unpaid internships and very few of them would be good

Yeah, "forced student labor" is 50% outright lie and 50% intentionally misleading for the sake of getting clickthroughs
but this thread's title was "child slave labor" which is just a complete outright lie

They don't get credit for this, they lose credit if they don't do the work. I agree that the child part is misleading, but it's still forced.
My vote would go to "I wasn't going to get a ps4, but this news wouldn't have changed my mind anyways". Even though it's bad and it would be better if this didn't happen, but uh, there's lots of bad things all over the world and they don't affect my decisions.

when sai said he was going to post this here I started mentally counting down to the desperate moralizing and smokescreens and so on
I wasn't disappointed
e: to clarify, I've often said that not getting the entertainment they want for any reason is a completely alien concept to gamers (which is incidentally why gamers as a whole couldn't successfully boycott a product even if its developer went to each and every gamer's house and personally punched them in the face)

You were looking forward to the "moralizing and smokescreens" by the people who think that it's acceptable or the people who don't?
I mean, I'm pretty sure that Foxconn is the company that makes iPads with the suicide nets and the 8 year olds and shit
So "pays students with college internship credits instead of money" is pretty low on the list of shit they do that is worth posting about, even without my disdain for the volcano of lies that is news reporting

OK, follow up question, I guess
Were you looking forward to it because you like to see people point out stupidity in bad news stories or were you looking forward to it because you like to point out stupidity in posts like mine
And if the latter I'd like to hear what part of it is stupid, instead of you just posting and laughing like it's the most obvious thing in the world and then sitting there silently with your stupid smug laughing cat avatar that subconsciously somehow makes me angry at you when I probably don't really need to be

I wouldn't call anything here "desperate moralizing". It's more along the lines of "this totally sucks but is not at all surprising."
that in itself is completely tragic, though. we're all so terrified to have an opinion (since that might open us up to satire, oh no) that we've utterly paralyzed ourselves. if people stopped worrying so much about putting themselves forward as disaffected coolbodies who've seen it all before and play devil's advocate with the best of them, this kind of whistleblowing might actually mean something. it doesn't have to surprise you -- but it should evoke something inside you beyond passive disappointment and a knowing shake of the head.
silence gives consent. don't be silent.

No, I'm definitely saying it doesn't totally suck, and that I don't see the problem, since they are not actually doing the thing that the article title says they are doing. They are just giving students college credit for an internship. Which, um. Yeah.
Like, I seriously wonder if anyone who has a problem with this actually clicked on the article or not. I know the OP sure as hell didn't.
