WHAT ASPECTS OF THE SITE DO YOU USE MOST? LEAST?

@GamingMitch: just go to that game's subscription and click Edit and uncheck "Comments" (and a comment isn't considered an "update", but it is considered a "notice", which is why you get a notice for it, notifying you of that notice - also thhere are no comments here http://rpgmaker.net/games/updates/ )

I am not closing the screenshots topic, but nor will I be closing the images feedback and gameprofiles and reviews and everything else and moving everything back to the forums like LockeZ wants.

Good feedback so far everyone! keep it coming.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Heh, well, I don't really think everything needs to be moved back to the forums, but I do kind of think there needs to be less clutter on the site. It's become extremely bloated.

I don't want you to close reviews, for example. I just think that having a list of the lastest reviews for all games is pointless clutter that distracts and overwhelms people and keeps them from getting to the parts of the site that matter.

I mean, if we had dozens of games, then sure, I could understand a feed of everything from all games. But we don't. We have thousands.
I like the Google search bar simply for the fact that I don't have to spell perfectly to find what I want. A lot more helpful than the old one since I'd usually be searching for something I knew very little about - let alone knew how to spell it perfectly.

I agree with and use these a lot:

-The frontpage big cycle banner
-Featured game spotlights
-The gamespots on the frontpage
-The buzzing newsfeed
-Buzzing games system
-Latest screenshots
-Random screenshots
-The Games portal
-Gameprofiles
-Reviews
-Blogs
-Game Images
-All Game Updates feed
-The notification system
-The ability to comment on nearly everything
-The various game development submissions like Articles, Tutorials, Scripts, Utilities/Plugins and Resources.
-User profiles (with the showase games, submission and post histories, and user statuses)
-Donation perks
-the footer

And these occasionally:

-RMN TV
-The Locker

Just found out about these:

-Development spotlights + history
-The development portal
-Dropbox integration
-The new Playlists - what/where is that?
-Image feedback

When I'm looking for new games I go to the "full games list" and do some custom searches. When looking for new posts I simply check on the place I'm looking for the new posts (oldschool way!). And I use the google search bar.

Image feedback sounds like a great idea! I find a lot of good stuff (articles, tutorials) in "Scripts, Utilities, Plugins and Resources".

I always look for the new stuff on the main page and check that stuff out.

I didn't even know playlists existed.
I'll use + or - to describe how much I use each of those things (+ being a lot, - being not much).

Also, I want some feedback on the ways you find out about things on the site. How do you follow or find new things?

I don't usually browse much. I just open the front page, and see what pops, what catches my eyes.

There should be some filter option where you can filter by year,
this would make it easier to know which games could be nominated for
awards.
I was wondering, are any of you attached to the dropdown lists for the various sections? As in, GAMES DEV EVENTS COMMUNITY STORE. Like, is that your go-to when you navigate the site? (Like, you hover over GAMES and then click on Blogs, for example). Or do you rarely visit specific links under the dropdowns?

I ask because dropdowns aren't very mobile friendly (like, how do you "hover" with your index finger anyway), and I get the sense that many of those links are infrequently visited, and most people just go to the portals or gameprofiles directly.

I was thinking of getting rid of the dropdowns and moving to a system like this: http://www.tsn.ca/ , where if you click on one of the portals (say, NHL), you get taken to the NHL specific portal, but below that main bar there is a list of all the sublinks there (Main, Scores, Schedule, Standings, Statistics etc...), but if you click on the Soccer link, you get Soccer specific sublinks like Main, MLS+, English Premier League+ , Champions League+, etc.... So for RMN, you'd click on GAMES (there would be no hover droplist), but on the games portal, just below GAMES DEV EVENTS COMMUNITY STORE, there would be a horizontal list of sublinks like Featured Games, New Games, Reviews, Media, Blogs, etc..

That would probably work out just fine for me - I don't use the dropdowns at all, just the portal indexes.
I use the dropdowns all the time. I would probably prefer the dropdowns staying,
the tsn system seems really messy.
The Programming and Plugins subforum, and by extension the scripting options. More on that here.
I like the dropdowns a lot. That's usually how I get anywhere, and I actually wish the community portal had a link up there, too.

I do wish that when I mark something as read, it would update in my other tabs, too.
the Community Portal link is just the heading itself... Click on COMMUNITY.

Annoying:

Getting notices for writing a comment in someone's article and not subscribing to it.

Certain games one game spending more than enough time, like over a year, in the buzzing section on the front page.
Pretty sure you can turn that off, kory - the notices.

Buzzing is based on people downloading/commenting/reviewing/etc the game. It naturally depletes over time and we do manually deplete sometimes, but when there's a lot of activity on a game page it earns that buzz. Deliberately excluding a game just because it's no longer 'relevant' or because it annoys people to see it there is wrong, especially when it picks up steam again after depletion. Some games are going to be popular - that's just fact.

Besides, Pom's been gone for about a week now. Get with the times, man. ;p

I know, I just wish the Community Portal was the default way to view the forums, at least unless you specifically set it otherwise.

I use the Community Portal and IRC.

I actually prefer the 'forums' to the community portal, I think the portal looks messy, but I never just click community so I don't have to worry about it.

So, this is what happens on my first RMN of the day, front page, open new tab for latest posts, forum and notifications. Then check the front page, seeing what's buzzing/new/download and open tabs for any that catch my eye. A glance over the highlighted games/events in the spotlight, and then down to latest reviews which also gets a new tab. Then glance back up to see what is listed as 'Important' on the header and click on it if it's a new offering. Then down to the bottom, skipping over highly rated and another quick glance at the newest screenshots.

By then I've generally got a dozen or so tabs open, so I just work through them, commenting, downloading, responding etc.

My home page for RMN is the Community Portal so it's my first stop, page-wise, but the first thing I do is check notices and mail, then check the community page and see what's going on.

It does depend what day it is as to what I do next, though. I'll have a look through the SubQ most days after checking forum posts, sort through them a little, then move on to whatever is next on my list. If it's the 1st or 16th of the month, make a BoB article by checking the blogs, if it's a Thursday (Wednesday American time) I'll check out the blogs, reviews, articles and media for front page stuff.

If anything needs attention from a manager, I'll check on that via the Admin panel, otherwise just bounce on the forum every now and then. I only visit the front page if I need to check to see that frontpage items worked okay (and that I haven't broken it) or if I want to check on certain things like New and Notable or current Buzzing section. Otherwise I stick to the community page.

Oh, and if it's time for podcast, I'll search all over the place for stuff that's been going on. And if there's an event I'm running/taking part in, I'll check that page out. And if I happen to see a cool game or something on the front page on the few times I check it out, I'll check that out. Usually in the latest downloads section, since I see all the new games already on the site, so I know what those are.

I'd never visit the bare forums if it weren't a link at the bottom of some threads, where I'm too lazy to scroll back to the top of the page. No, seriously.

I say combine the two (or make Community the default, with an opt-out for those who just want the forums bare).

But for me the most used feature is the black bar and the shortcut bar, as well as posting in the forums themselves. ;p

Also the Edit button. I use the fuck out of that.

I've edited this post four five times now. >.<;
