THAT ONE THING....

As I approach the end of my days in school, I keep thinking about what life will be like when I am not on a super tight budget. I spend hours daydreaming about things I will be able to do and/or buy once I have a much more significant influx of cash. I quickly realized, I dream rather small... most of the things I want are damn near basic amenities to most people already: a dishwasher, more room to fit all my crap, a decent gaming computer, a bed frame. It was an odd revelation knowing that I can pretty much get most of the stuff I want within the first few months of having a real job.

I started thinking more about it, trying to figure out what else I would want with greater means, and only a few more things popped into my head, most of which weren't any more lavish than any of the things I already listed (expensive trips and cruises and such). I was kind of disappointed with my lack of imagination on the subject. So now I have been trying to think of the apex of what I would do with greater means. In other words, what would be the top item on my bucket list? The one thing that if I could do it (or have it), I could say without a doubt or regret that I would die a happen man. So far, I have not yet come up with anything...

So I ask you, the wonderful members of RMN: What would that one thing be?
You should watch Vsauce's show Lut. You'll very quickly find things you want!

If I had enough money I'd probably dream up a dream house and then build it. Or more accurately, have others build it for me.

Also note that just having the money for a rainy day or whatever may be what you want. I'd like that.

Basically my "do this to die happy" list is just all of the game projects that me and my partner have planned to work on. Designing games is just the kind of shit that makes me happy, you know? I guess, obviously, finishing Neo Lescia is the foremost thing in my mind on that list, since I've several times touted to myself and to my partner that it's the whole reason I even get up in the morning, you know, saying shit like "it's the reason I was born" and crap like that.

It's hard for me to think of something that I'd have to buy on that list. Most of it is just stuff that I want to do at one point or another in my life. I want to climb the highest point in each province, and on a more grand scale the highest on each continent. If we're really getting crazy I'd like to go to space, as I'm sure anybody would.

Having a dream house is another thing that I'm sure everybody wants, you know, with some cool old cars and lots of unnecessary crap in it. It'd be cool to have a Zeppelin or something.

I know of one thing that having would make me a lot happier in life, but it's such a dumb thing to say that I'm not even gonna go there. Not like it's even physically possible in the first place.

I'd go for a jetpack or airplane to be able to go anywhere on a whim. That only because paying for a trip with Virgin Galactic would be an one shot type of deal.

I keep thinking about what life will be like when I am not on a super tight budget.

This will only be true if you remain as a single guy for your whole life. If you ever want to start a family, the family will find a plethora of ways to keep you running a zero balance bank account, no matter how much you make.
zero? I wish it were so high!

...also I wish I was joking.

pls send me money
I know your pain buddy, we are constantly using our overdraft! That one thing, huh? Dunno, right now, I guess it'd be a PS4 - but Watch Dogs got delayed and Kingdom Hearts 3 has no release date yet... That one thing would probably be enough money, from say a lottery win, that I could cut my work hours to part time and focus more on my hobbies and spend more time with my family.

Money = the ability to work less and make more games and more art without having to worry so much about hustling wares

The only other things I'd love to spend my money on would be having a reliable place to swim (like a local pool) and travel a little. There are a few countries out there I'd love to see, and ancient architecture is really inspiring :)

Even if I were to start a family, it's a far off prospect for me. I'm not super young, but I'd like to live my own life a little while longer before I "settle down". And with kentona's grand words of wisdom, kids are now scarier than ever! (kidding... but not really)

Not that I'm going to push the issue that much, but you can't say something like that and expect us all to forget about it!

So far, I really like your answers, and I honestly feel inspired to at least strive to have some more grandiose goals. It's better to shoot for the stars and fall short than to remain earthbound for life, right?

Also, I know that money isn't the root of all happiness, but it does allow for more freedom to make yourself happy. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Well, it was like 2 in the morning when I posted that, and now it looks like I've really put myself in a bad position, so I'll bite the bullet. I'm a Xenophile. Forgive me if that's too personal and I've just ruined the topic by being weird or some shit.

So I don't know where that tangent is going. It would be cool if we made contact with another intelligent species? I mean, I know everybody would find that cool, but I'm sure you get my meaning.

I think the correct word you are looking for is sentient. Intelligent should be used selectively when describing other human beings, if you know what I mean ...
Maybe just that high-stake poker game you announced? :>

I don't think that's too weird or anything. If I understand what you are saying correctly, you'd like to discover ETs, ones that we could communicate with and what not. Depending on the angle you take, that's a pretty admirable goal. The technology we would need to reach far enough out in space (within a reasonable amount of time) is still WAY out there, considering the next closest star is... I think about 3.1 lightyears away. Anyway, even if you mean it in a baser context, it's still better than what I've got!

You have no idea... I have been inundating myself with the WSOP, both this year's main event and last year's. I know a lot of people think poker is boring and pointless, but I would love to be able to play on that level. Maybe you're on to something here...

Just in case I haven't been clear, the idea is that the "one thing" discoveing other intelligent life would give me is the chance to have some sort of romantic relationship. Because in my case, there aren't any women on Earth that suit me.

Hooray for awkward conversation!

So that means for you women are from Venus ...

Uhhh... I'm not ready to die anytime soon... I'd say a lifetime of happiness?

I don't think people really bother thinking about whether they have regrets or not at the moment of death. Maybe we do so in apprehension of death because we are unsatisfied with our current situation and try to find ways to increase or reclaim some form of happiness. It's one of many ways to get a grip over your life, although kind of a depressing one, methinks (or just silly fantasizing for some).
