I'm new and need help doing custome backgrounds and sprites for RPG Maker Topic

Hi everyone. I'm new here and hopefully I can learn how to make a game with custom backgrounds and sprites. I've tried in the past with no success. I have some ideas for games but I want them to have a custom look. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The most I've dabbled with is editing pre-made sprites. My current avatar, for example, is, I think, commonly referred to as a "Franken-sprite".
