Good evening/morning/noon, everyone! As you may or may not already know, the Pokemon RMN Version Event has wrapped up two days ago, and we've got a solid roster of user-made Pokemon!
... BUUUUUT That's only half the battle to making a Pokemon fan game. If you haven't been following discussions going on in the event page, we are currently determining how to structure our gym leaders, in an epic battle between sticking to tradition and coming up with more creative options.
This is where you, a member of the RMN community, can come in! Below are links to five polls related to Pokemon RMN's gym leaders. Keep in mind, you are free to pitch in your own ideas as well as to what is listed, which is why the "Other" option exist in some of these.

What Pokemon type should the first Gym Leader use?
By "first gym leader" I mean the first gym the player will encounter in the game. Basically, I am torn between choosing a Normal type gym or something similar to the first gym of Pokemon Black and White, where the leader you face and the type of Pokemon you fight against depend on the starter Pokemon you choose. I am also open to other options, but keep in mind that I generally do not want gym types that are capable of giving one type of starter Pokemon an advantage or disadvantage over others at the start of the game, as was the case of the Rock type leaders of the first few games.
For reference, here are the Pokemon designated to appear at the first few routes of the game, to help in your decision:

What themes should gyms have in general?
Basically, we are torn between sticking to the traditional mono-type format from the games, or coming up with entirely new style of gyms. Two of our members have suggested new ideas in oppose to the old formula, as listed below:
Another idea I have in mind is a dual-type theme, where gyms would specialize in two elemental types instead of one, such as Psychic and Fighting, for instance, or Grass & Dark types. Just throwing that out there for an option that isn't too alien, nor is unoriginal.
http://strawpoll.me/835826
Assuming we are going with type-themed gyms, pick the type you want would want to see in the game
Depending on votes, the top picks will be the ones chosen, provided that we've come to an agreement that we aren't doing anything different with the Pokemon Gyms.

Should the Elite 4 follow type themes as in the games, or be typless?
This one pertains to the Elite 4, the stronger trainers that you'll find near the end of the game after you have defeated every gym.
http://strawpoll.me/835851
Should we include a double-battle Gym Leader (i.e. Tate and Liza from Pokemon RSE)?
Self-explanatory. This type of gym battle involves using two Pokemon at once. If the votes lean towards yes, then at least one double-battle gym will be included.
You can also find the complete Pokemon list on the event page for help knowing what Pokemon types will appear in this game. What are your thoughts?

Berry Gym (Gym 1 or 2)
Leader: Player's Mother
Pokemon: Early route pokemon (the cuter ones) holding berries.
Note: Has a sitrus berry as an item to use during the gym battle.
Reward: 3 sitrus berries. Incinerate TM (because it counters berries)
Cute/Smart (Calm)/Tough/Cool (Quirky) Gym
Leader: 4 trainers. One for each characteristic. Character type that is opposite of player character type fights the player. Standard Trainer fights a random leader.
Pokemon: Pokemon that match the leader's characteristic, preferably across many types
Note: Cute is the opposite of Tough and Smart/Calm is the opposite of Cool/Quirky.
Reward: Different TM for each of the 4 leaders (Game would need to allow the rematching of gym leaders, which is something I would really like to see. Preferably with them being slightly stronger the second time)
Weather Gym
Leader: Meteorologist
Pokemon: Any pokemon that could take advantage of each weather type (Sun, Rain, Sandstorm, Hail.). It would work best if we have pokemon with each of the weather starting abilities so that the weather would change for each pokemon when it switched in, but I don't think we do.
Note: If we do not have weather starting pokes, we could just have random weather every turn. Maybe this could be an outside gym in a city where the weather is sporadic because of legendary pokemon activity.
Note 2: Rock types get a 50% Sp Defense boost in a sandstorm, so rock types are probably best for the sandstorm portion.
Reward: 2 TMs for first battle (Sunny Day/Rain Dance). 2 for rematch (Sandstorm/Hail)

2: I'd say we should either go with the good 'ol never-fail type gyms, or we can go with MY idea:
actual strategy based gyms!
Some examples: Payback Gym: All pokemon have moves like Payback or Revenge.
Baton Pass Gym: Title says all, a gym based off baton-passing boosts to some pokemon!
Weather Gym: Rain dance/Sandstorm/hail/sunny Day and the pokemon that can abuse said weather!
Debuff and/or Buff gym: Where the leader uses stat-lowering moves to make you switch out (with, like, SR or spikes set up (Either or, NOT both!)
OR
Where the leader uses a set-up pokemon or two.
Status Gym: Self Explanitory, and have it be EITHER Para or poison, Burn is more geared towards physical attackers and sleep is too damn annoying. Para and poison affect most pokemon, yet have a few that can counter it, so I think it'd be good.
Paraflinch
In fact, I believe a mix of both would be good.
Another idea I have in mind is a dual-type theme, where gyms would specialize in two elemental types instead of one, such as Psychic and Fighting, for instance, or Grass & Dark types. Just throwing that out there for an option that isn't too alien, nor is unoriginal.

I like the idea of the last Elite battle being your parents. A double battle against the two who have raised you to be the very best. Proving your worth and how much you've grown while away from their sheltered protection. It'd be neat to see~ ^.^
The first gym would be neat if it had a type that isn't strong or weak to the starter pokemon - that way no matter your choice, you still have a chance. Psychic or Dark would be interesting. Maybe Ghost, to encourage learning special moves early on. That way no matter your catches, you have a chance as long as you use special moves.
As for themes, why not a mix of both? Or a mix of dual types? Like, a Fire and Ice gym. That way you can't just ace it with only one or two pokemon of the same type. The idea of a strategy-themed isn't bad, but if you got a gym where the main ability used was something like, oh, rollout... well... Anyone remember that Miltank?

Good evening/morning/noon,I think you're looking for Good Afternoon :P
Poll 1 - Normal
Poll 2 - Other; I like all of those ideas. I think you should use them all. Some gyms are typical 1 types, some are 2 types, and so on. No reason they all have to be the same category.
Poll 3 - Abstain. I don't really care.
Poll 4 - Typeless. That sounds harder. Like someone mentioned, beating an elite four was usually as simple as countering their type. Not exactly elite.
Poll 5 - Yes. Why not!
- Poll 1
The trio idea is actually kind of cool, and I like it; however, I voted for Other since I also like the idea of having a single type for this gym (given of course that we actually choose the single typing route for gyms, which we very well may not). Some interesting choices I came up with from looking at this list were Poison or Psychic.
Poison because it's neutral to all starter elemental types, because there are Pokemon in the early route you can catch to do super-effective damage to Poison types (Atmana, Digloch, Miceberg), and because Fuzard resists all three elemental starter types and would be an excellent gym leader trump card.
Psychic, just because Atmana is an early route Pokemon and it'd be interesting to see it's evolutions early, and also because Psychic is one of our most diverse types. - Poll 2
Again, I voted Other this time because I agree with Link_2112; we don't have to follow a set format for all of our gyms. Some can be strategy-based, some can be type-based, some can be dual-type based, and so on. This leaves a lot of room for creativity when making the gyms, in terms of theme, difficulty, and even level design. - Poll 3
I could only vote for one, so I picked Fairy because it has the least exploitable weaknesses and a strong type immunity, plus we do have some rather strong Fairy types in this game. Some other types I'd like to see (again, assuming we go the single typing route) are Fire, Electric, and Grass, and an interesting dual type gym I'd like to see is Dragon/Steel or Dragon/Fire.
Fire because it's a diverse type, and it also has a very strong status affliction and a weather condition associated with it, so there's a lot of room for creativity.
Electric because I think it would be interesting to have an Electric gym where all of the Pokemon start out holding an Air Balloon, or are all given the Magnet Rise buff, since Electric's only weakness is Ground.
Grass because I like the idea of a rainforest gym, where the gym is based off of Grass type Pokemon and it's always raining, to deter Fire-types from trying to sweep through the gym.
Dragon/Steel and Dragon/Fire are both type combinations which cover Dragon's weakness to Fairy. On top of that, Dragon/Steel cover each other's weaknesses quite well, and that combination would make for a very challenging gym given the relative strength those Pokemon types usually have, so it would be best suited for a later gym. - Poll 4
A typeless Elite Four would be so much more challenging, as would be expected of the supposed 4-5 best trainers in the region. - Poll 5
Yes, I really don't see why not. The more diversity the better I would think.
I think gyms should have a type, and then the rematch should be something like what seiromem suggested (payback, status, weather, etc). But rematches should be hard, like endgame hard.

Poison actually resists Grass, and is super-effective against grass as well. I do like the idea of the first gym being psychic, however. One of my ideas for the trio-badge style gym was to have a psychic theme, using Atmana and one of its evolutions whose typing would work against the starter you picked.
Anyway, I do like the idea of adding variety to each gym. I think it'll work depending on how it is paced in the game.
The idea of a pokemon trainer picking only one type is kind of stupid if you think about it. Do you, as a player, only pick one type? That's bad strategy. Picking certain dual types can offset it, but it's still a bad idea for PC or NPC. Nintendo probably did this because kids play the game and they want to make it easy, I say you should avoid doing things just because Nintendo did and make a legitimately hard game. I like the concept of pokemon, but all the games are just so easy and brainless. It's one big easy button.
author=Ratty524Well nevermind then. That was just me being a dumdum.
Poison actually resists Grass, and is super-effective against grass as well.
author=Ratty524That actually works out quite nicely. After I read this I began thinking about how this might be used to fit in with the theme of the gym, gym leader, and town.
I do like the idea of the first gym being psychic, however. One of my ideas for the trio-badge style gym was to have a psychic theme, using Atmana and one of its evolutions whose typing would work against the starter you picked.
So the gym leader of Newproge city has the ability to see glimpses into the future and/or strongly believes in making fantastic, far-reaching goals and striving to achieve them. Since the names of the towns represent the ideal path of a game on this website (from Ideeya to Misao), the first gym is like the first step in the game making process; having an idea and beginning the steps to making that idea a working game.
If the gyms end up being based around single or dual type, it might be a good idea to give the leader a Pokemon or two that is the opposite of that type, yet knows a move of that type. It will counter any strategy that is based purely around countering the leader's type, and could throw the player off, even resulting in their defeat if they go into an Ice-type gym with some strong fighting Pokemon only to encounter a ghost type with Ice Beam. Same goes for walking into a Steel-type gym only to encounter a Fairy or Psychic type with Flash Cannon.
