CAN I USE MUSIC FROM OTHER GAMES

Posts

Pages: 1
Hi, I'm working on a RPG. I used a song from Final Fantasy 6. Is this allowed? I noticed game rips were OK, I was wondering if the same applies to the music.
As long as the game isn't commercial (for sale) and you give credit it should be fine. Unless Square happens across your project and tells you to take it down/remove said song but the chances of that are quite small (and really, you'd just have to change the song which isn't a huge deal.)

That said, if you're wanting some free-to-use songs there's a bunch in the resource section that are quite good~

Thank you, I actually just downloaded them awhile ago.
No offense to the OP, but this gets asked on every community several times a year. No, it's not legal. As for allowance, the allowance can only stretch as far as the company you are ripping from.

Most RM communities will allow it and not say anything, as long as you don't share the rips. RMN is the exception, where rips are shared, but VXAN and RMW don't allow sharing rips, but will look the other way if you use them in your game.

However, if (and that's really a big "if") Square or whoever decides to pursue legal action, they do have that right. More often than not they're not going to care about some hobby RPG Maker game; but if word gets out and popularity builds, they may force you to remove the game (like they've done with the Chrono projects).
Clearly people who ask this have never played RM games before haha
Using a few tracks here and there from other games is alright, just don't plan on over-doing it unless you credit the creators of every track you use. Mixing it up a bit with RTP music and community-created music instead of just shoehorning in a bunch of licensed music that doesn't fit is a good idea.

Ain't that the truth. Even if you rip all the songs from Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest no-one will really care. It's not like they're gonna sue you, unless you start selling your game.

The short answer:

No, you can't, but we don't particularly give a shit and we do it anyway. Knock yourself out.

Yeah, I thought so. The submission page just looked fishy.

As far as graphics go, there is some leeway. For example, using rips is a common practice. So long as you do not claim or imply that someone else's graphics are your own, it is not considered plagiarism at this site. However, using someone else's graphics against their wishes is frowned upon and will be dealt with should the creator object.[quote author=

It didn't mention sound.
Most communities have separate standards when it comes to rips versus using material from another member.

You can use rips from known non-indie games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, or Zelda so long as you don't take credit for it. That includes graphics and audio. That doesn't make it legal or guarantee safety from any repercussions should the rightful owners choose to come after you, just that using rips in your game is an accepted practice.

But if you take from another member of the indie world, most prominently another RM user, then you risk punishment of sorts (be it ban, suspension, etc).

So... if you must rip, don't do it to another RM user.

Frankly, outside of a fan game, I really can't see the need for stand-alone rips, especially audio. If you're not making a Final Fantasy game, there is no need to go and collect Final Fantasy audio.

I've got hundreds if not thousands of music files on my computer, all of which have come from free non-video game sources (Aaron Krogh, Atelier Nonta, Presence of Music, H/Mix, Short Story....), and they're all high quality.
If you take stuff that was made for a fellow creators' project without permission, then you're going to be in trouble. We really don't like people taking resources that were made specifically for something else.

Commercial rips, okay. We all know where they come from and it's not hurting the industry to have them in your game especially old 2D ones from games like Chrono Trigger and the like. It's not hurting their sales and you're not making money off someone else's work so that's allowed.

Taking from someone else's project, though, is not - unless they either have stated that people can use their resources or have given you permission to use them. If neither of these are the case then no. Why? A few reasons.
1 - Most people assume that unless they know where a resource comes from, it was created by the person using it.
2 - Even if a game is not commercial and making money off their resources, the 'branding' of that style is theirs and using it without permission basically tells others who don't know better that it is yours. It becomes associated with your project instead of theirs and takes away from their hard work. Yes, even if you give credit you are still stealing.
3 - In the case of an indie commercial game, you are stealing money and sales from a fellow game maker. We ask that no-one do that. Support each other in your game creation endeavours.
4 - It shows that you have no respect for others at all and we are trying to create a community where each and every person is respected in their own right. You do something dirty, you lose respect based on that. You do something awesome, you gain respect based on it too. By taking someone else's stuff you invalidate the respect they rightfully earned as the creator of that stuff, and show yourself to be someone who doesn't respect others.

In the case of theft, we will sit and talk with the parties involved to check things out - whether that be checking to see if you have permission to use said works and seeing if the original creator minds the usage. Only after that will punishments occur.

We hate theft. Deliberate thieving results in a ban and in most cases, perma-ban. So, yes, be careful what you take from where.
Cool information and statements here : ) I haven't played too many RPGmaker games I must admit ( because, no time >_< ) - and the ones I played all had custom made soundtracks, so I wasn't a 100% sure about that either. But, turns out it's pretty much as I thought.

cheers~
