A WORLD WHERE YOU COULD TURN BACK TIME

Imagine a world, much like our own in most respects, except the only difference being that 1 in every 7.23 million human beings have the ability to turn back time 1 minute once every day. That's ~1000 people in the world having this ability at any one time. They know exactly how to turn back time from birth. What do you think the world would be like? There is no way to restrict the persons' time travelling abilities, and no known physical way to identify them either. Ability is not hereditary, it's just randomly propping up throughout mankind, and has no bias to gender, age or location. When time is reversed, it does not affect the brain activity of humans, but instead people are sent back in time knowing full well that they are going into the past. Going 1 minute back in time is not painful, in fact the transition is non-existent.

What do you think a world would be like in this situation? What rules/laws would be present? How would humans try to do damage control in case they try to use these things for evil? If you had this power, what would you do?
You can't do much with one minute a day.
You could use it to save your life or someone else's, provided that whatever happened didn't kill you instantly.
You could use it to avoid mistakes or wrong moves at work, in your love life, etc.
You could probably use it to buy and win at the lottery a few seconds before the winning numbers come out.

Some time travelers would keep quiet about their gift, others would use it to help people in the shadows, others would try to become cult leaders...

If the gift is known to the rest of the world, the FBI or some other governmental agency would try to find and capture every time traveler. Those who manage to flee could only go into hiding.

I disagree with Avee. A minute, well spent, is worth a lifetime. A person like me, who delves into the occult, is obsessed with the arcane, and seeks conversation with spirits, demons, and angels, would find a minute of time travel per day to be priceless. Would I seek to conquer the world? Unlikely, but it would be a quick way to solve some immediate problems, but I would still consider it a misuse and underestimation of such a talent. Help people from the shadows? Certainly. Covertly guide the world down a path towards global enlightenment? Now, you're speaking my language. One minute a day! A changed decision here. A skeptical mind turned true believer after a one minute demonstration there. What couldn't I accomplish? Even better, I couldn't accomplish it instantly. It would still be a power to be patiently earned and properly respected and appropriately worked for.

The Earth, let alone the entire solar system doesn't stay in the same position in space for long. If people had the ability to go back in time, I don't think they would go back too far lest they end up out of the planet and dying in space. This assumes this time-travelling capability tries to take a person at the exact location they are standing on within the universe.

Going 1 minute back in time every day. Everyone's physical bodies are where they were 1 minute ago, including the time traveller's.

If these people have existed since a mutation happened in evolution, then the phenomenon should already be recognized by now. War generals would have used it to send a spy behind enemy lines, and rewind time by 1 minute to retrieve them. During that time a whole bunch of time travellers would have gone public, whereas a few would have stayed private. I suppose the unspeakable element is that a person could commit any crime (rape, murder, theft) and then have a way to reverse it so that they know what it feels like and not have to feel the consequences. I suspect that if someone committed a crime they would have a law that you could use stun bullets that stun them for more than 1 minute so they can't just reverse what they did.

So the power of the police for stunning, such as tazers and stuff, to render the power of the mind immobile for at least 60 seconds, would be crucial.
Jokes.

I would ask out beautiful ladies. If I got rejected I would go back in time.

I would take a shit, and see if I could make it change form the second time.

I would get in a fight with some ass to see if I could kick their ass.

I would smoke a blunt and see what its like going completely sober as fast as I got high. (I don't do any drugs by the way)

I would try some of the hottest peppers in the world and go back so I don't have to wait for my mouth to cool down.

I would make extremely high bets on roulette and black jack.

I would hold my breath for an extra minute under water.

I would smoke a cigarette quickly, and then go back so their is no damage.

I would call 911 and make a bomb threat.

I would get a second chance if I was hunting and the animal got away.

I would jump off a cliff.

I would destroy my computer with a baseball if I got angry that day.

I would take a shit in the middle of mcdonalds.

I would burn a bible, and watch the bible reverse burning.

I would eat my vegetables and go back in time so that I did not eat my vegetables.

I would watch what everyone did and say and go back and tell everyone what they are thinking. I would be a real psychic!

Every civilian would have to equip themselves with some kind of stun gun, and at first you wouldn't know if your aggressor is a time traveler or not, so you'd end up using your stun gun on anyone who assaults you.

A clever time traveler criminal would hire followers, have them commit the crime and take the shot/consequences, then he'd step in to eliminate the victim/police and go on with the crime.

But here's the thing: the only reason why a stun gun would be in place is to punish those who use time travel for evil purposes. In fact, there could even be a social stigma that those who can bend time owe it to the people to save them, and there might be social tension between time benders and normal people. A sizeable portion of time travelers would just want to live lives like normal people, and only use their talents sparingly.
There's an issue with this, though. 1 minute can be invaluable but it can only be used one a day. If you use it to save one person, what of the next person who comes along?
You can change a mistake you made, but then make another mistake in its place. It's not enough to change your life completely, or to change laws. What can you really affect in one minute, once? Not as much as you'd think.

For example, bank robbery. Guys go in steal shit, one shoots a hostage. Fine, go back one minute. That guy is still ready to shoot someone, stop him. But he's still amped up and maybe he shoots you, the person who stopped him, instead. Maybe he shoots someone else. Maybe denying him that one shot makes him shoot more than one person instead. Now you have multiple casualties and no way to save them. Sometimes letting bad things happen staves off worse things happening.

Another example - an argument. You say the wrong thing to your spouse, you hurt them. And you regret it but if you are in such a state that you said such a thing are you going to be in a state as to take it back, even with a minute to calm yourself? What if it was something they said to you first, that hurt you bad, which made you say such a thing. You go back and suddenly they're saying that again and now it hurts double because it's the second time they've said that to you and the repetition makes you angrier. You were already angry the first time. This time you say something worse or hit them or decided enough is enough. Going back did fuck all to help.

And no, you can't say "Oh, but I immediately regretted it and calmed down". No, that's not how emotions and the human mind works. You still feel resentment over what they initially said/that they pushed you so far to make you say what you did/that you're even fighting in the first place. One minute isn't enough to get back on an even keel.

Not only that, but recognising a mistake within a minute as well as coming up with a plan to change that mistake? Not really much of a possibility. A lot can happen in a minute but if your mind can't keep up, that's it - you've missed your chance to change anything meaningful.

That's true. Perhaps 1 minute is too small a time. 30 minutes could be more powerful. Except I was thinking, since 1000 people in the world also have your ability, it might change the world in unforeseeable ways. Imagine a country gathering together a group of 100 time travellers that were able to see 100 versions of something happening in the next 30 minutes? It's strange and unthinkable. They could use people as war weapons. Lock them up and coerce them into doing their time bidding for them. I can see a government doing that. Putting someone in a torture chair and forcing them to turn back time when the war isn't going their way. I wonder if that would cause many travellers to go into hiding.
Well, if we're talking a country like North Korea where most of the populace is brainwashed already, then something like that would be viable, but 1000 in a population of 6+Billion is very, very small. A country would be lucky to have 2, let alone more, and it'd probably be Europe, Africa or America who'd get the largest amount, being the biggest land masses. Even then, they'd have to seek out those people and identify them among the literal horde of people without said powers.

And how could they see 100 versions of something if 100 of them were to come together? They'd see all the same thing - it's not like they're travelling through universes after all. Also the time is limited, even if it is just 1 minute each, they'd still see only minute differences before having to send someone back to change it again (I assume you mean something like a conga-line of change where one person goes back, changes, then the others observe what changed... but even then, only the changer can see the change - the others have no idea that something was changed at all because what they're living is being rewritten each time. And debriefing each and every one of them would take time if they wanted to analyse what would be the best change to keep. Even then, someone might mess up a change and actually affect the world in such a way that going back again is impossible for the next person in the conga line.)
I would smoke a blunt and see what its like going completely sober as fast as I got high. (I don't do any drugs by the way)

You would probably forget to go back in time and stay high. Read: I am pretty smart. I enjoyed some weed one time. I then failed to follow the plot of the pilot to Xena Warrior Princess. I FAILED TO FOLLOW THE PLOT OF XENA.
WEED MAKES YOU REALLY DUMB, MAN. OTL

And if I had the power to go back in time one minute at a time it would be to eat food again or to take back really dumb things I've said.

Go back a minute, win a million dollars.

Hahaha, mispronunciation. Damn judges and their rule book deserved to be bitch slapped. :P

And I fail to follow plots after a month. I have a bad memory.

But the one minute once a day rule is just fine if you're NOT trying to be a superhero. Remember, there is no rule that says you can't plan ahead of time what you will use that minute for, and a minute well spent is worth a lifetime. Imagine if there were a bill I wanted passed, and I had access to the President of the United States.

Imagine if I knew something about you and one of your adversaries, whom I want you to succeed over.

Imagine if someone embarrassed you in order to make him or herself appear superior to someone with important decision making power over your future?

What can be done with one minute, a sharp tongue, and prophetic foreknowledge?

Que diabolical laugh.

A lot, enough to start a entire cult and rise to power. The power to know something before it happens would shock people. A few bits of information you could gather from someone in a minute, could collectively add up. Now this person is puzzled how you knew so much about them. You could even threaten them for information, and they wouldn't remember. Provided they talk with a gun pointed at them.

That might be too risky. You could also brag about it and give people flat out healthy evidence you can do so. Which would freak people out. It would be acts of magic with no bullshit.

But you see, that's the point. Of the one man who succeeds in doing something, there's always plenty of others who have tried and been revealed. It's the one man who's smart enough to it, and disciplined enough to not talk about it who ties to the strings to the puppets.

You could technically go much farther back than 1 minute if you find enough people to chain your power with. With 1440 people you could rewind all the way back to when you met the 1440th person.
