SOCIAL MEDIA-STYLE INTEGRATION AT RMN

First, forgive me if this is the wrong forum in which to post this!

I was thinking about a topic I viewed recently and how, if I were to do the thing in said topic, it would be interesting to be able to tag someone in a forum post. I was thinking along the lines of hashtags, et cetera, and how it would be a very useful feature to be able to tag a certain person in a reply on a forum with, say, the @ symbol. ie, let's say somebody posted something they thought I'd be interested in, they could post @Kaempfer in the forum and I would get a new notice in my notice tab, alerting to me that post.

Similarly, somebody could post $6124 and it would send a notice to people who were subscribed to the game number in question (in this game, it's Devil Hunter: Seeker of Power).

I don't think RMN currently has any functionality in this regard, but if it does and it's something I've overlooked, forgive me!

Obviously, the syntax would be up to whoever did the leg work in programming it, mine was just an example I think would work. I think it would be a useful feature to increase forum useability. What do you guys think?
Right now you only receive notices if you asked for them, by choosing to subscribe to games or events or joining a development team.
This new idea would enable anyone to send notices to people who didn't ask for it, which is a potential annoyance. It could also be abused for advertising.

If someone I know would like me to take note of something on the site, they can pm me. I don't think this new feature would add much.
I was thinking this could be cool! It might be a good idea to make the notices able to be turned off if the notices caused by the @ tag annoyed someone. That would solve the issue with unwanted notices.

If it's not too much trouble to implement, I think this could be a great idea! Notices are RMN's coolest feature so expanding upon it sounds wonderful.
Edit: Double post...

I suppose this could demonstrate an additional way this could be a hinderance - double posts with tags would probably bug some people.
I think the @username feature would be a good one to notify people of replies. I've seen it on a few other sites.

Not sure about the game notification. It could be useful in some cases, but like Gourd said, it should have an off option. (Definitely don't think the $ should be used, since it would be confusing if someone was actually discussing money lol. Maybe #0000 instead).
Yeah, $ is a pretty terrible piece of syntax, whoops!

And, of course, you'd have to be able to turn them off. I'm sure there's also a way to set it so that you don't receive double notifications for games posting screenshots on their gamepages and using hashtags as well, and that'd be key.

Sending a PM every time you'd like to alert someone to something is a bit of a time-waster for both parties, especially when it's something minor like: "Oh, I posted a screenshot in the screenshot forum/gamepage and HelpfulUser gave me feedback- I've edited it to reflect said feedback, @HelpfulUser!"

I don't know about you guys, but this scenario has happened to me before: User posts screenshot. I get notified. I post lengthy feedback. I get notified of a new post on screenshot. Someone has said 'nice shot'. I get notified of a new post on screenshot. Someone has said 'cool trees'. Repeat twelve times. On notification 13, the original User has posted an updated screenshot to reflect my feedback and the feedback of a few other users. I've checked said screenshot 13 times!

That's a pretty limited example, I know, but I just wanted to show that it could be integrated with gamepages, as well.

The whole point of a forum is to encourage group discussion- if you're sending a PM every time you want somebody specific to look at something on a forum, there's a good chance you only care if that person sees it. With a tag system, you make the regular post and then add @Kaempfer to alert me that there is information I might interesting in there. Heck, I already address my responses in forums in the form of "@whoeverwasspeaking".
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

People could still have the ability to turn off usertag and gametag notifications, and you could require, say, 20 makerscore before you're allowed to tag people.

Just as an FYI, you can adjust whether or not you get notices from all users, or just a game's developers.

As far as tagging users with @, I might look into it if enough people will find it useful. And as with just about everything else on the site, you'd be able to turn it off.

If @kentona becomes a real thing, it also means you could change the default quote styles to "author=@kentona", piggybacking on the same function without adding a dedicated quote-alert system.
