EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION

Just as a by the way there's the EU election thingie going on this weekend and I'm sure there's people here from various EU member states that are voting.

I know that I personally don't really know enough about what the hell the whole EU thing is doing. And that seems to be pretty common. EU is dictating everything that is going on (says some) yet it's hard to bring up enough enthusiasm for this election.

However in these days leading up to it at least it seems the radio is doing nothing but election talks which is helping in its own way.

So what party are you maybe voting for or maybe not voting at all or however you do these things.

Personally I've always voted for the Swedish People's Party in the EU elections since I think it's sort of important that "my minority" has some kind of representation in the European parliament. Even though I don't really agree with most of the other politics they are doing. So maybe I should just throw a vote for a Swedish-speaking candidate in a party slightly further to the left.

Fortunately I still have a couple of days to think about this.

The idea behind the EU is to organize laws, business and other regulations within Europe to make sure the continent doesn't again become a mess of small states that all fight each other. It's obvious not everything about it is working the way it should, but the basic idea of uniting Europe is a great one, I think. Always clinging only to national interests just leads to conflicts and suffering.

Long story short, I really hope many people will go cast their vote and use the chance to actually influence Europe in a positive way, instead of falling for the propaganda of anti-european populists.

Yeah, that's kind of the big downfall of the EU right now. The majority of candidates lean towards Washington Consensus economics which aren't good for individual nations or the EU project itself. Unless they start thinking big ideas, like US Continental Railroad or WPA big, the EU will fade into irrelevance or just fracture up.
Well, the idea behind EU is only as relevant as how well EU actually sticks to that idea.

Anyway, the EU voting are far more complicated than national voting. What happens in the EU parliament is far more distanced from the average person than what happens in one's own country. Most of us also don't know what questions EU does and doesn't handle.

I voted for the Green Party - partially as a protest vote, but mostly to hopefully increase awareness of policies such as Universal Basic Income.

Sure, they're anti-nuclear and all, but there's no way in hell they'd actually get rid of nuclear power/weapons. Empty politicians' promises and all that.
