TANKENTAI BATTLE SYSTEM N00BISH QUESTIONS/HELP

So, I started to try out battle systems for RPG Maker VX Ace, and I immeditally fell in love with the Tankentai Battle System. It has mostly everything I need for my game, and is just a gift for the heavens. That being said, I have some ideas for my game that I worry won't be able to be done with the system, so I thought it'd be good to get some help/feedback for my n00bish questions.
First off, I'm planning on my game to have a Mario RPG style to battles. What I mean by this, is that the battles will be sideways, and when attacking, multiple options for attacks pop up, and then to pull off the attack successfully you have to complete a sort of quick time-based mini-game of sorts (Something like this: http://rpgmaker.net/games/2205/MHBS/). I don't know if this is capable in the system though, and if it is, how would it be pulled off? Scripting?
Second off, the battlers are a bit too tiny for my liking. Thus, I was wondering if there was any way to change the size. Every time I've tried so far, I've just broken the system, because I have no idea what I'm doing to be honest.
So yeah, any help would be great, as I'm sort of stuck at the moment.

There is a way, as my game uses larger sprites. I just forget what I did to accomplish it. I'll get back to you!

There is so many side view battle systems out there. Maybe try Yami Symphony.
The thing is, I've looked around, and Tankentai is the one that fits all of my needs, except the ones listed above. The only reason I would change systems is if there was a well-built script with a MarioRPG-like combat style already built in another script.

Thanks! I plan on my sprites been much larger then the usual RPG, so anything would help.
*UPDATE*:
So, I've switched to Victor's Animated Battlers. Everything is set up nicely, but I'm still curious as to if there is a way to change the size of the fighters.
Also, I'm wondering if there is any MarioRPG-like addons. I found Galv's Timed Attacks script, and that would answer all my prayers for the battle system, but it doesn't seem compatible. Any feedback or suggestions on this would be great.
