As we are probably all aware, the overall tone of a game can greatly influence how players percieve, interpret and value it. This is especially true for story- and character-heavy games as well as games with an untypical premise. While some games present themselves in a way that is clearly intended to make you laugh, other games address more serious matters that leave little to no room for comic elements.

Of course, these are only the far ends of the spectrum. There are numerous games that are in fact quite serious but still contain a fair share of humour, too. A good RPG Maker game example for this type would be To the Moon. The main theme of this game is a everything but funny, yet there are a number of scenes designed to amuse the player. Similarly, some games concentrate largely on the aspect of humour but have some seriousness to them as well. In Search of Immortality, for example, is such a game. Its focus lies mostly on odd characters and comic dialogue, but after a while it becomes clear it's not all just fun and games.

Personally, while I do enjoy laughing and joking around, I am in fact a rather serious person. This is why I especially value games that, in addition to being enjoyable to play, make me feel involved and give me something to really think about. My favourite type of game is therefore "serious with some humour" (which is not to say I dislike the other "types", this is just what appeals to me most).

So how about you? What are your preferences when it comes to the overall tone of a game, and why is that so?
I'll take either of the two "middle" options (admittedly, those two things are what most stuff is), and am also fine with purely humorous stuff. However, most of the things I've seen/played/read that are purely, 100% srs serious are often way to "try-hard" to the point that they'll often seem immature and become humorous for the wrong reasons.
I like games with serious dungeons and humorous gameplay.
I picked the second option although a combination of both is good.

Ultimately, the tone doesn't matter for me. I mean, there are certainly times when I could use a light-hearted game, and there are times that I don't mind getting into a more serious game.
As I get older, my tolerance for humor decreases more and more, as more and more of it becomes ineffective. But I can still appreciate something that can make me smile off to the side of a serious affair.
The second/third options are my personal preferences. I tend not to go for either extreme, since I like a little balance.
I like a mix and feel that games shouldn't be all one thing anyway. A mix of humour, sadness, joy and everything in-between is, imo, best.
Either "extremely super parody it doesn't make sense" joke games or a serious game with a good joke here and there.

Joke games are inflated in RPG Maker communities I think and also I hardly find them to be really funny either. You need to be good at it or better don't try.

Purely serious is also bad.

Think of "Game of Thrones" (or the books it's based on). The basic story is super serious and so many people, even main characters, die, yet in each episode there is at least one scene that makes me laugh. That's the perfect combination.
Everything in moderation for me. Too serious, and I'll get bored. At least throw me a few comic relief characters or some zany NPCs . XD So naturally, I voted for the 2nd option.

I admit I'm a bit surprised by the poll results... The majority seems to prefer more serious than humorous (but not entirely serious) games. And I hadn't expected nobody would vote for either of the extremes, especially the "purely humorous" option. But actually, that's totally fine with me.

Good point. There are of course some exceptions, but I agree in general. Games (or other media) that, well, take themselves too seriously often feel just so forced that they end up becoming ridiculous.
The same can be true for games that only focus on humour. Most of the time, they quickly start to lose their appeal because there's just no relevance to anything in them. At least, that's my point of view.

While I haven't read or seen "Game of Thrones" itself, this is exactly how I feel as well. I don't have a problem with being intellectually challenged or emotionally touched by a game (quite the opposite), but having close to no comic relief tends to make it both less interesting and less realistic. After all, humour plays a big role in our everyday lives, so it's hard to imagine why game characters should be super serious all the time.
So, well, pretty much what yuna said.

Whatever Metal Gear Solid counts as.
Yeah, I'm surprised that more people voted for "Humorous but a bit seriousness" than "Humorous", because in humor-games a bit seriousness is kind of wasted. I'd rather have a full parody game in that case.

For it's me it's clearly:

Serious, but with some humour. > Humorous. > Serious. > Humorous, but with some seriousness.
Its kinda debatable what counts as "seriousness" in a humorous thing. Stuff like Airplane! and Excel Saga use serious scenes all the time for humor.

Also, I feel like a lot of anime is exactly 50/50 split.

Uh... serious with some humor and some additional ironically serious humor?
I like both. If you ask which one i enjoy the most, it would be games with a first half filled with humorous moments, followed by a more serious and dramatic second half.

When games are "too serious" or "too much about humor" at certain point I get bored and have to save and continue later, while games that mix both keep me interested for longer periods of time.

I like both as well. Even though game which I am making now is more of comedy RPG, it has serious elements as well. Which one I prefer? I don't have preference, really. It largely depends on my mood. Sometimes I want something serious, another time I want something lighter like Wino Adventure or Szajba (if you aren't from Poland, you probably won't be able to play those - AFAIK neither was translated).

I personally like any type of tone for the game, as long as the story is
enjoyable itself.

Yeah, I also like the mixes in a game, I think that makes great stories.
I choose - I like them all equally well.

I like serious games but, I wish there were more comedy games out there cause so far the funniest game I ever played was Conker's Bad Fur Day and that game is really old. You would think something would have topped it by now but not that I've seen.

Try Gulpy Gulpy - weirdest and funniest game on English speaking RM scene.

Oh jeez you had to remind me of that game. Yeah I'm aware of it. To me it's more annoying than funny. I will say that it was funny to hear the reaction of the guy playing it on youtube though.

I didn't realize Persona was a humorous game. I've heard those games are really good but haven't had time to try any of them. Would you say Persona 4 would be a good first game to play in the Shin Megami series?

I actually bought 4 games recently (mostly only had time to play 1 of them being Xenoblade) and among those 4 is a comedy game based on the tv show Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law. So, far it's pretty funny it's definitely worth the 30 cents I paid for it. (It was with a bunch of bargain bin PS2 games)
