Hello! I could have sworn I saw a post like this in the past, but in searching for it, I couldn't find it.
The Encounter Rate steps you set in RPG Maker 2000 seem pretty wonky and I've heard this discussed before. Is there a way to fix that? Does it require a patch or plug-in?
Thanks a bunch! ^_^

Short and sweet, this is how I got it to work on Rm2k for Tales from Zilmurik: Origin. It's really handy if you organize your encounter groups by dungeon so that you can just call a random group between this number and that.
The first box is the first page that becomes active with a passive process event page, while the second is auto-start which becomes active once the "Battle Start" switch is turned on. The "wait 0.2 seconds" is to allow your character to finish moving to the next tile before a battle starts (it just feels better aesthetically).
Wow, that's really awesome! Thank you very much! ^_^ I think I understand it. Is it okay for me to use this method in my own game?

Of course! Wouldn't really be a worthwhile community if we kept all our findings to ourselves, now would it?

Pretty much the same way.
You could probably do it the same (or near to) in Ace as well. One thing I do like about Ace - most of the eventing tutorials for 2k/3 work for it.

I would have never thought to use the players current position and then check if it had changed to determine steps. That's pretty amazing. I also like that this now gives me the ability to remove encounters from an area with a switch. :DDDD

Or you could have the enemies visible on screen! ;)
I've never been fond of touch encounters, seeing as they always get in the way of my creativity. I like being able to map what I want, when I want without having to worry about the player getting stuck in a crack behind a wall of enemies.
