[RMVX ACE] BLUE SCREEN OF WIPE MY GAME FROM HISTORY

Hey guys! Just writing here because I've hit a brick wall. When I was working on my entry for the Indie Game Maker Contest, about a week into the work my computer decided to blue screen during a save in the program. Turns out this corrupted the entire file and I had to start the whole game from scratch. The only way I could make it work was by borrowing a friends laptop so I could finish my submission for the contest. Well, that time has come and gone, and I've only had RPGMaker VX Ace for that month and I'm really wanting to get back into the program and work. The problem lies therein with my personal computer.
At first I just planned on getting a new computer, but finances have not been kind to me lately so I have to think of something else. This blue screening problem of mine comes and goes with the passing of time, at any given month it may be so bad as to blue screen memory dump once every hour or so, (especially moreso if I have heavy memory programs running that aren't full screen) yet for some reason full screen games (like Terraria, for example) run fine without blue screening. (League of Legends is the exception... It would blue screen five minutes into any game.) And then, some months it will run without blue screening whatsoever. Everyone I speak with says that its a memory problem with my motherboard, and the only fix would be a new computer altogether. Now granted my computer is a decade+ old alienware, I just cant afford to make the upgrade right now. Are there any suggestions on what I should do to avoid losing weeks, if not months of progress in a game by it blue screening during a test save?

Back up. Back up often. Get Drop box and back up your game onto it before a session of game making and after. This way you have a back up in online storage. Have a USB drive and use that to back up to so you have a physical copy.
If it's a memory issue, try Alt+SHIFT+TAB and close unnecessary processes that are just using up that memory. Do this before opening Ace just in case something causes an issue and check to see which ones affect what (they're usually pretty self-explanatory). Also, close unneeded programs to conserve memory space.
Run a defrag to clean up your HD, do an anti-virus check too - maybe a virus is causing the memory leakage.

I back up all my projects at least once a week; I figure it's better to be paranoid than losing work. If you really want to be thorough, back-up your project to different places in case something unforeseen happens.
Sorry to hear about your computer problems ;_;

I back up my entire computer's files once a week after a deep system virus scan. If I feel like I made significant progress on my game one day, I do a backup of just the game to a second external hard drive without a virus scan.
It's not paranoia. It's being cautious.
In terms of money, always keep an eye out for sales. Every now and then, Amazon, Target, or others will have a REALLY good sale. I'm rocking an Acer Aspire 5750G that I got from Tiger Electronics about 2 years ago. Normally, they run for about $500, but due to a sale, I got it for $200. Sweet deal.

You can do a free online virus scan to quickly rule out a virus.
Always back up your work... every time you modify it. You don't have to back up the entire thing every time, either; just backup the files you modify. Set your window view to sort files by "Last Modified" and this is easy.
I agree with Liberty, too: quit all programs before working on your game. It just isn't worth the risk, because losing work is such a setback.

Dropbox is a god among programs. You could be hit with a meteor and dropbox still has your game. Maybe not the version you were working on but the version before that at least.
Obviously this is due to uploading your crap online but your data can survive a comet. No comment on you.

Check your computer's event viewer at the times of blue screens to see what the error is. Google it to get some ideas of what the cause of the error is.
My first guess would be your computer is overheating. If its with a game it might be because some hardware is getting too hot which triggers hardware safeguards and shuts the system down. Get a can of compressed air, take your computer outside, open up the case and blow out all the dust and other crap that's in there. Get the nozzle of the compressed air into the heat sinks and fans of the CPU and GPU and try to get those clean too, a lot of shit can build up in those.
If you want to test your memory get a spare USB stick or blank CD and make a bootable copy of MemTest on it. It'll scan the memory in your computer looking for bit errors that can occur with faulty memory.
