[RMVX ACE] USE OF RESOURCES

I'm working on a small project just for fun and would like a few opinions.
I am considering just using the default resources or those made with the character creator in my game, maybe a few small custom things. I feel that if I tried to make custom art for my game it would take an extremely long time and would have to be simplistic.
I am making all of my own music, but just wanted a few opinions, do you feel that a game is more appealing if the graphics are custom made as opposed to the default runtime graphics that so many games use? Or do you feel that it's really not that important. I could make my own and it might be a fun little journey, but it would be an extremely hard load also.

Honestly? RTP is fine - what matters most is how you use it. A badly designed game with all custom assets is still a badly designed game, no matter how you cut it. As long as you're happy with the result, that's fine.
Besides, you can always approach it from the idea that the RTP tiles/etc are just stand-in graphics until you create your own. Or add a few edits here and there to give your game a different look. (Or you could pillage the resource section of this and other sites for already edited tiles. I've a pretty big collection up here of different kinds of tiles and there's going to be a fairly large free DLC added to Steam some time this week with a lot of free-use resources.)
Whatever you choose to do, just remember that it's how you use what you have that matters. After all, in the recent Indie Game Making Competition (with $10,000 Grand Prize) the winner was an Ace game that made good use of mixed custom, edited and RTP resources and the 3rd Place RPG winner was fully RTP.
Graphics are not the be-all, end-all and focussing on just them can drag a game down, unfortunately. Good luck with your game creating! Also, check out a few tutorials on mapping and map design. They can help quite a bit~

Thanks! You know, I think I will give a few of those guides a visit. Also I like the points you brought up about graphics. I know the RTP graphics are fantastic anyways and are often successful, I always just wonder though if people think they are over used. I'll probably stick with them as I don't know if I would be capable of making a good alternative. Thanks!
