I don't know that we have any trans- or other people currently on the site (or have in the past), it's not really something that gets brought up. I do know we've have and have had homosexual, asexual, bisexual (myself in this group) and other-sexual people who frequent the site and it's not an issue as we welcome anyone when it comes to creating, playing and discussing games.
We do! That's actually how the 'Welp' option came to be. Initially, there were only Male and Female for options. This was like 4 or 5 years ago, but I was contacted or it came up or somehow I learned of the lack of the Other option. That droplist is just a hardcoded list. I added 'Welp' as a lark one time while working on other bugfixes, and I had intended to come back and change it to 'Other' or somesuch, but that code was pushed to PROD before I got around to it, and the person that was looking for the change was like 'that's perfect!' so the term 'Welp' as an option stuck.
...and now you know the rest of the story.
Welp is a bit of an ongoing inside joke/slang word around here, and it's inclusion as a Gender option is meant to fill the 'Other' or 'Not Telling' or 'Fuck You, you don't need to know' options.
I'd rather not make it a free text field, but only because spambots will use it as yet another place to put links to malware sites or be another place to check for malicious cross-site scripting attacks. And that's just a hassle. But I would more than happy to add more options. Or even just remove it altogether.
I don't even know why we have it - we don't use it for anything. Probably just convention.
If you guys compiled a list of Genders I can add it in the next time I am in the code.
Yeah, probably best to just take it out entirely. We literally just had a discussion about how gender doesn't make a fucking difference in Gam Mak anyways, so it's obviously not a field of important information.

Replace it with a "number of penises" field that accepts numerical input

I guess the politically correct way to phrase it would be "preferred pronoun" instead of "gender"? There are still only two of those (for now), so "he"/"she"/"not specified" as options would cover all the bases and still serve the purpose that the original field served.

How about replace the Gender thing with a textbox instead of a dropdown box so you can enter whatever you want. It doesn't REALLY matter, so I can't see much harm.
The problem (lol?) with choosing what you want to specify yourself as is that you can be silly stuff dicksfornipples or catdog. We should all just refer to eachother as "it"

Yay! Now that it's a text-box, I can enter "empathetic" instead of having to fall into that whole "masculinity" thing (there's been plenty of things to taint that for me, with Gamergate being the most recent). I'd like to think I'm somewhere out there - that I don't fit some sort of binary - because I feel the most alive when I cast away these labels and embrace the person I want to be, but I've always been bound by tradition.

There's nothing wrong with ridiciculousness. These people seriously believe that they are somehow identified as whatever fantasy they cook up, though. If someone does it as a joke, whatever. If someone seriously believes it, I can't help but think less of them. That's why I don't want to know, so I don't have to think less of them. Does that make sense?

While you're changing things in the account settings, under "Contact Information", can MSN be renamed to Skype? MSN hasn't existed for a while.
One problem though. I find that I have checked the gender field on occasion so that I don't make a mistake when talking about people in the he/she or him/her sense. If it were gone I think it'd be a little bit more likely that we stumble through gender pronouns awkwardly.
I think allowing it is still the best option, but maybe just point out that Welp is Other for those who wish to make that specification. Also, pointing out that there's no forum rule or broken law on the site from picking your preferred gender should work (or change the descriptor to Preferred Gender or something like that).
That way people won't feel like they're 'lying' and it'd show right off the bat that we're inclusive and that they can feel safe picking the gender they want to be accepted as.
