RESOURCES

Am I the only person that finds the 'official' resource packs to be ridiculously overpriced? Especially considering that some of them aren't very good.

Yes, some of them are worth it. But a few of the resource packs just aren't worth the money... I wouldn't even use some of them for free, let alone pay $20+ for them.

I'm sure this is probably frowned upon, but I normally torrent a resource pack to decide if it's worth it before I pay the money. I'm all for supporting artists (assuming they get any of the money?), I just want to make sure the money spent is worth it first.

Discuss.

I really don't think you understand how MONUMENTALLY CHEAP paying like $25.00 once to get like a FULL SET OF GRAPHICAL RESOURCES YOU CAN LEGALLY USE FOR FUCKING COMMERCIAL GAMES THAT YOU CAN THEN SELL FOR LIKE $25.00 EACH! Sorry, I don't mean to shout.

But that is an *awesome* deal.

The price alone makes it not common to see, which in my opinion is a good thing.

Might not have been set that way intentionally, but it works.
See it as buying membership into a slightly more exclusive? gam mak circle.

You could commission an artist to make graphics for you, but I doubt the price would be any different. It would probably be more expensive, even.

I can't say whether or not the RTP add on packs are worth it. Probably not, since if you wanted to add more RTP you could just shoot for entirely custom made stuff instead. Seems like a better decision in my mind.

@Pizza:

It would not only be more expensive, it would be literally hundreds of times more expensive. If we're talking about a pixel artist that wants to be paid a living wage, at least.

Umm...the resources we use are so stolen, most of us don't even know who they're stolen from. What is an issue is if you steal from someone and then claim it's yours. That's an automatic ban. In fact, there was whole thread that started a flamewar because LockeZ misread the rule and thought the moderators were forbidding stealing. (You know that's another thread we need to raid for tagline material.)

That said, please don't steal from the RMN store. That money goes to running the site. That's why the price is at full retail.

Yeah, that's kind of what I realized halfway through writing that down.

Let's not bring up the stealing thing again you guys. I like having an unbanned account.

Is the stealing point aimed at me for torrenting? Because, like I said it's only to decide if the pack is with the money spent. I'd never use a pack without paying for it.

I hadn't considered the commercial use aspect, which I agree makes it a pretty good deal. I'd still say that not all of the packs are of great quality. And, my torrent 'trial' method may be too morally grey for some people who just outright buy the product, only then to regret wasting money on things they'll never use.

Meh, I never buy graphics. If I ever make a commercial game, I plan to make the graphics myself. Meanwhile, why buy when you can rip?

Yeah, sorry. I feel extremely sleep deprived for some reason, I can't think very straight at the moment.

Basically my point is that I don't know if the pack is worth it, it's not for me because I can obviously make my own graphics. But I can't comment on whether or not the pack is overpriced because I don't know what the average cost for art is. Cause I've never made any money off of my art.

I'm just saying that I wouldn't spend EXTRA money on the RTP stuff really, unless you were like Liberty and super into using the RTP all the time. I'd rather collaborate with someone to make a game, or try to set up some deals with people or something, cause it just helps out more indie peeps and gets you connections in the industry and shit. Plus it's easier to sell a game with more original resources.
Please also keep in mind that the money made from those packs goes to the bank of the actual content creators, not the company. The direct sales of the packs are what the creators are paid for their works. These aren't big-name people, either - they're fellow RM game makers like the rest of us. The only difference is that they were asked by Dejica if they would like to make commercial packs because they'd been seen around the sites.

Take Celianna for example. She started out making RTP edits and just got better and better at it. Eventually she got noticed and Dejica asked her if she could make expansion packs for the RTP since her style fits it very well (or I should say, she can create in the style of the RTP).

Others like our own Nessy and EvilEagles also contribute to these packs - both were involved in the recreation (and they had to recreate, not just port over) the DS and DS+ graphics. Nessy still adds stuff FOR FREE in the ReStaff Releases on RMW (along with some of the other content creators for Dejica) that match with those packs.

And they didn't get paid by commission, but by the sales. So please, before you torrent, remember that the money they lose via people stealing those graphics is money they need to live. These are real people we know and love (and even if you don't know them, they're still people who make some of their living money by doing these packs).

As has already been pointed out, the price for getting someone to make you a pack of graphics is pretty big, especially if it's commercial and reusable AND editable. Yes, you can edit these packs once you purchase them, which is a huge advantage because this means you can customise them for your own game. They aren't just tiles, either - sure, some of the packs are, but some also have portraits and sprites and other stuff thrown in as well.

I'm not weighing in on the stealing thing one way or another, let me just say that the price of most of the resource packs I've seen is what I'd describe as RIDICULOUSLY UNDERPRICED, not RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED.

I mean, my company regularly pays $30.00 or more (sometimes WAY more) to get one artist to draw ONE PICTURE that we have the rights to. You can get an entire game's worth of art--and the license to use that--for less than that.
