Still don't know how to use these forums, just lost the wall of text that was going to be this post...

Anywho, I'll keep it short. I'm looking to make a resource pack of side-view animated battlers in my spare time (50 or so monsters/NPC's, and 10 Pc's). Is there a widely accepted Animated Battle System being used right now? Or is there a standard format that works well with existing battle systems? I'd like the resources to be as easy to use as possible to keep them accessible to a wide range of users, and figured finding the most common system would be a good start. (There's always the option of offering multiple formats, but we'll cross that bridge later.)

Any help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Last I heard, the most common format was Tankentai, which uses the same format in RMXP and RMVXA. There are at least a dozen animated battler scripts that use this same format. Victor Sant's animated battler scripts have their own different format, but also let you use Tankentai battlers.

I guess they look like this.

Wow that is a lot of frames... Well, I guess if that's the norm, I'll have a look at the engine. Seems like a lot of frames are repeatable, should keep the workload down, but I seriously hate having to copy-paste frames. Eh, I could learn to live with it.
If you use GraphicsGale stick-to-grid it becomes a lot easier ;w;
Or maybe using Pyxel

I'm just using gimp. It's worked with me through the ages, and most importantly it's free.

There isn't an industry standard or a norm. Personally, I have never been a fan of tankentai. It's true that it's popular but it's nowhere near universal. The three I'm personally aware of are victor sant's scripts, battle engine symphony for vxace (which I think is either no longer being supported or put on hold or something), and Yanfly's simple visual battlers script. The last of those just uses basic character sprites and doesn't use (or support?) actual battler sprite sheets.

With that said, Kajira I wholeheartedly approve of this project.

Victor Sant's scripts will actually let you use the tankentai-style battler graphics. I like Victor's format a little better, but if you're trying to make your graphics for general use instead of for a specific game, it doesn't make sense to use it.

Notably, most resource standards for side-view scripts will intelligently scale to sprites of any size. Don't feel like you're forced into making chibis!

Those two I cited are free* as well and far superior to Gimp since they are made by spriters, for spriters.
Really. GIMP is good, but when it comes to pixel art, it just can't hold itself close to something like GraphicsGale. And Pyxel is great for spritesheet and tileset editing because it actually lays a tile structure, which allows you to edit all equal tiles at once. By the way, I'm not sure how GIMP handles it but GG has built-in animation support, it is amazing to create animated sprites with it.
I strongly recommend that you check these out.

*They have paid versions, however. But the paid versions are cheap and only add a few minor features, such as, in GG's case, GIF support.

I'll be sure to look into those. As for style, I'm not sure yet what I want to go with for humans. Maybe I'll make some bases and put a poll up sometime for people to vote on... Either way, this is just in it's planning stage so there's plenty of time to figure all that out.
you should just do what feels more natural for you :D
