RM2K and RM2K3 style in 3D!!!

Well i found a video about an 3d maker which resembles the old school makers feeling.

Pretty cool isn't it? So what is your first impression?

It's a cute effect that reminds me of Minecraft. I'd certainly play it, but I'd hate to see a flood of games in this style.

There's a couple of things they could do to improve the polish, though, like blacking out the exits to zones and making 3/4 sprites for camera rotations. It definitely looks like this game looks better because of the dev, not the engine.
It looks a bit... odd, to be honest, but I like it. The flip the character sprite does when the camera rotates is pretty jarring, though.

Well it's possible to have 3D in any rpgmaker. It just requires a ridiculous fuck tonne of effort. Here's an example.
If that's the best that a 3D RM can do, I'll stick with 2D.

Actually, RM3 on PS2 was 3D; not sure why they can't just bother with porting it over to PC. That way, everybody who wants 3D can be happy, and we'll find out if the claim that a 3d maker won't be able to live up to the hype (due to lack of models, skills, etc) has any merit.
It doesn't look very good. It looks kind of jarring.

I had developed a 3D tileblocks engine before for LandTraveller. At some point I'll have to merge the technology there with RPG20XX.

Unlike in the video, mine had arbitrary block shapes, 3D autoblocks, specular lighting, dynamic sunlight, normalmapping, and arbitrary camera angles.

The challenge in a 3D RPG Maker is not the 3D itself, but making it easy to make your own 3D tileblocks, autoblocks, and map creation. This is the part that would take heavy development and alas I don't think I'll get to it for a long while.

What's wrong with good old fashioned 2D graphics?
