@Sooz, I just recently did some work for somebody (for free) but it didn't work out, and now I can't believe I did it for free XD. I guess I am underestimating my worth as an artist to other people, is all I mean.

I'ma just leave this here.
Haha, thanks. But that experience seriously made me realize that I have no desire/patience to work with strangers, and basically it was just a newb mistake on my part. It was indeed very naïve of me to jump into something like that without really thinking about the amount of work I'd have to do, and the temperament of the other dev... so yeah, I will NEVER make that mistake again.

I wasn't going to use digital backgrounds but actual photos as backgrounds of stuff like oceans and fire. Maybe the thing is what I have pictured in my head is differant than what y'all are thinking lol.
Wow, that... would not really work well together with anything.

I think you're probably better off going with RTP or free stock. While it's possible to use a different style in a RPGMaker game, it's the sort of situation where EVERYTHING has to be that way, or else things start clashing weirdly.

Well I used actual photos as back grounds using the enemies the game came with and it looks bloody fantastic!

Oh Jesus why is that image so huge?

Because you are capturing an image using some form of digital camera, then directly uploading it onto a site without resizing the image. Cameras tend to take very large images so that they look good when printed, for reasons that aren't germane to this topic. For displays on a screen, images don't need to be as large.

Google "picture resize" and you will find numerous free, web-based programs to resize your gigantic images into something better suited for online use. (The biggest side being about 600-800px is usually the largest you want to go.)

Also, in this case, LEARN TO TAKE A SCREENSHOT. It's hard to discern quality in a camera picture of a screen. Though it's already fairly obvious that this doesn't look as good as you think it does; for one, the perspective doesn't line up at all. The battlers should not look as though they're hovering in the air.

Opinions are opinions though Im fine with them hovering in the air that's how I planned it. I only had my tablet to take a picture that's why the quality sucks.
You're happy with the shadows in the air, too?

It seriously looked fine while playing. Maybe youd have to actually be playing to see what I am but I honestly thought it looked great. If I had someone custom draw they could just do without shadows anyway. Background is necessary to reflect the imagery of the area and that photo is very atmospheric.

Maybe its just my state of mind and im a fucking weirdo who knows lol.

Also in Earthbound the characters looked like they were floating with shadows in the air and it worked out fine with those psychedelic backgrounds.
Well, a screenshot rather than a poor quality photo would give obviously a more accurate impression of what you're trying to achieve.

Yeah I couldn't figure out how though. Not sure the text yelling from Sooz was necessary though. Kinda put me in a sour mood lol.
The point of your picture was to show the combination of drawings with photos of real castles and whatnot as backgrounds. The picture itself is terrible, so it is impossible for anyone to appraise it fairly (because the background is so fuzzy it looks more like a drawing than a photo anyway).

Here's an article on taking & resizing screenshots.
http://rpgmaker.net/articles/372/

If that doesn't work (if it's for a specific engine; I don't know if it applies to VX Ace, may have been written before Ace existed) then I guess just wait until someone who does know how to take screenshots (i.e. not me) tells you, or google it, or whatever.

Here it not that I think its going to change anyones opinion.
I like it and that's what matters right?

I don't think it looks too bad (apart from the whole floating + shadow thing).

What matters for you game depends on what you're trying to do with it, I guess.

Well again if I used color pencil drawings I could request no shadows ofcourse. I want the backgrounds to be atmospheric and be pleasing to look at. It doesn't have to look like the characters are a part of the background just blen enough that they don't become an eyesore. If theyre detailed just the right amount I think color pencil characters would blend in well.

Thing is though I don't know the kind of talent, effort, and time it would take to accomplish such.

You're magical to me.

The problem is, you can clearly see the floor on your background. It's currently where your message box is. And your characters are floating several feet above it.

That was fine because Earthbound's backgrounds are clearly abstract. Yours looks like an actual place, even with filters on it. And you can see the floor. And they aint on it.

Yes. Though if that's your attitude, why are you posting pics at all? If you're going to ignore feedback, then why share?

Dude, if you're going to actually improve, you need to change your attitude to what other people say. All this:

just screams "I don't actually want to work hard and improve." And you know what? It's OK if you don't. It's absolutely, 100% fine if all you want is to make games that are for you, that only you care about, and that are tailored toward you having fun. I have a buttload of comics in my room that are absolutely that.

The thing is, if you're only doing it for you, don't consult others and don't bother showing anyone else. Personal things should stay personal.

If you're actually wanting to make a game for people other than yourself, then you need to ditch the attitude that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Especially if your audience is uniformly saying "this is not working."

There is a phrase in writing: "kill your darlings." It means that, no matter how proud you are of a bit you just did, no matter how much you love it and think it's great, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work and you need to cut it out immediately. If you're going to do any creative endeavor for any audience that isn't you, you MUST internalize this motto.

PS I "yelled" at you on the screenshot thing because it is not only a basic necessity for showing how your game is progressing, but it is absurdly easy to find out how to do it. If you are not willing to learn the very basics of how to share images on the internet, then you are really not deserving of any sort of attention.

Judging not just from this but from several other threads, Mr. Magoo is obviously not long for this world unless his attitude changes. Alas. Aremen.

Also not knowing (or being willing to research) how to take a screenshot properly (hint: use the print screen button) is what we in the business might call an ill omen.

Not that it is necessary and it feels a bit like dogpiling but: yes, the floating RTP characters and their clearly visible shadows do not look very good superimposed on that lovely photo of catacombs. Nice photo, though.

Sidenote:

I'ma just leave this here.

I've seen this before. This is pithy, it's amusing, and in some limited situations it might even contain good advice. That said it comes from a privileged perspective that feels totally disengaged from the realities for the real world. Very often in today's world avoiding any work that feels exploitative will mean avoiding getting any work, full stop. I guess what I'm saying is, this is overly idealistic to the point of being actually bad advice for most young creatives most of the time. I say this as someone with tons of experience on both sides of the freelancer/contractor relationship. That said I'm hoping to make this comment a la carte and not get drawn into a longer OT discussion of this.

Sorry was already upset over other things so I got defensive. I just personally thought it looked nice even with the floating thing so zI got a Lil butthurt if you will. I apologize and will try to improve.

I should just come out and say I have aspergurs and mood swings so even though I tend to get really defensive I get over it pretty quickly.
