[UE4] UNREAL ENGINE 4 IS NOW FREE

The monthly fee to use UE4 is now gone. It is completely free for noncommercial use now, and although you can also use it for commercial projects, you owe them 5% royalties on any amount you make over $3,000 quarterly. If you make less than that on your games, it's still free.
Now that it's completely free to try out, you should give it a shot! It's a lot of fun and pretty easy to learn. Its new Blueprints system lets you develop gameplay in a manner similar to RM's events, so even non-programmers can give it a shot!
Would there be any interest in a community event to try it out together and produce some simple games?

that sounds like a pretty sweet idea.
If you have an idea for a framework for an event, send me a PM and I'll set it all up!

Oh nice. I was thinking about trying UE4 when it was on a sub plan but now I'll definitely fiddle with it... if I can pull myself out of Eorzea.
I had to laugh at the irony of the last person to respond to a topic about Unreal Engine being unity. XD
author=Trihanand now you ruined it.

That's really cool! :DDDD
Though I'm guessing UE4 isn't ideal for making RPGs?
It's just as easy to make an RPG in it as any other engine. There's a strategy game template that's a good starting point.
This is fantastic :D I've been hoping for a chance to play around with it.
It definitely has the power, but depending on what you're aiming for, the overhead work is probably a lot higher. If you're making something that RPG Maker can handle (2D, Dragon Quest-ish battles and mapping, events, etc.) then using UE is gonna be overkill. For anything 3D or really really unique or customized, Unreal is a good choice.

So they just announced that Corona SDK is free now too.
This is cool, but then you'd need an RPG framework to make RPG games easy. If it sounds like there isn't one, this makes it fresh ground for one of you.
I just heard. :D I think I'm going to be taking a look at it sooner than later.
Oh hell yes. Definitely going to be one of the first templates I check out.

I'd be happy to teach basics on URE if anyone was intrested but be warned if you look at UDK stuff wrong it will explode
This is amazing news. Seems we could all turn our indie-RPGs into high-end products with enough experience and practice. :D
is there a way to run this on low-end PCs? i've been wanting to make games with something (free) other that RPG Maker for quite a while, and this is perfect, but my PC is absolutely terrible.
Jer: If you want something lower-end, get the free version of Unity.
so, uh, are we doing an event or what? I don't have any experience in Unreal (and I can't seem to find a book on it in my work's online library of textbooks. I did find a Unity one though!) - which means that I can't lead or guide an event for Unreal.
So someone will have to step up if this is going to become a 'thing'!

I would kentona if I didn't have like a billion other things to work on. Got a college assessment due tomorrow and then once I finally have that out of the way I'm writing Slip into Ruby part 4.
I was thinking that a good way to start would be with a level design event, something simple to get people accustomed to using the editor without delving into the technical stuff. It ships with tons of free and awesome assets. Basically, make a map of any kind and any size and upload a build where you can roam around it in either first or third person.
