Hey guys!
It's another week already. Marsh wasn't as popular as I hoped for. I don't mind. When I look back at my map, I have to admit that these colors don't go together. I'm glad I stuck with pink/green combination.
Theme for this week is yet another classic, which can be easily made with use of any RTP. The theme is
Volcano Lair
It's inspired by classic game I Expect You To Die. Can we do better? Is it even possible?
And If you have any suggestion on theme, go ahead and write it. I'll probly use it.

Seems I didn't manage to make the marsh map in time, but I'm still going to post it here later. The new theme sounds exiting, though. And even if I only manage to make a "normal" volcano map, that'd be cool already.

P.S.: I'm pretty sure you meant "Volcano Lair", not "Liar".

I only just found out that "marsh" and "swamp" are not synonyms - of course, only after I had already finished this swamp map. Welp, better late than never, I suppose. Even if it's the wrong thing...



It's not awesome, but it's okay, I think. Next up: Volcano Lair.

It definitely look like wetlands. It reminds me of Blackmarsh from Dragon Age (green Blackmarsh) . I like the foggy overlay, it marginally improves the impact picture has on me.
Here is my lair. It's ugly as I still using Mace Blue's tiles and this one map was made for the game. It's cheating, I know. I'm going to 'reveal' a new theme tomorrow and I'll try to make one more map with more usual resources.



I don't know, why the picture is so strangely anti-aliased. Tileset isn't.
Sounds like a fun thread. I need critiques on my mapping so I guess i'll post something.

Still not too comfortable with this chipset atm...

I wish XP had a lava "water"fall by default...

ten_blue_egyptians, while I think your map looks pretty good, it's a bit too dark to properly see everything (especially the opening in the wall). Considering there's lots of lava and fire around, some more light would be fitting. You could also apply the "Bush Flag" to the lava on this map, to seemingly make the Cerberus stand in instead of on top of the lava.
Also, the placement of that crate (at the edge of the higher platform) looks a little odd. Perhaps you could also shift-map parts of that platform to remove the rocky edges at the sides where it touches the walls?
These are just some suggestions, though. I'm not good at VX Ace mapping, so I don't know if everything I said makes sense.

Cashmere, that looks astonishingly comfortable for the inner parts of a volcano. I like it. Though these people must be either very brave or very stupid :)
Though you do have me wondering about the window. How does that work?
Also, I'm pretty sure that lava flowing around freely in such a cave would ignite that woman's hair and perhaps some of the wooden objects - or at least make it impossible to breathe due to the heat. I'm probably overthinking this, haha!
@Cashmere - those badasses tho, chillin, 'avin a spot of tea next to a lava pool like it aint no thang XD

@NeverSilent - Thanks for the advice! Never heard of Bush Flag but I'm guessing it makes the lower half of a sprite transparent? I use regular VX so not sure if it has it (half of the engine is still pretty foreign to me tbh). Shift clicking the edges by the walls made the map look waaay better too. Cheers for those lil tidbits of info.

Tried to do something with the 2k3 RTP, mapped in VX Ace. I'm a bit rusty with the old RTP, but it was fun.

Neat, I wanted to make one with 2k3 myself. However, I haven't got to computer till now today. And It's literally Minutes to midnight here. I may make it later, but I probably won't as I want to work on the next theme, which is a letter to an underrated platformer (cuz It doesn't have any rating). We are about to make a
Clock tower.
You can make either interior or exterior, top of the tower or its bottom. You can include it whole, if you manage so. It's up to you.

@Egypt It does seem lighter now. Did you updated the picture or is it caused by the darkness surrounding me? I think the map is bit too busy. It may be caused by the way you placed some objects.
@Cash All furniture and other objects are placed to the upper wall. There is nothing at the bottom. Piano's sprite and TungerCat don't fit naturally. And If your goal is to make dorm like feel in a lava cave, I would suggest to make it more regular with majority of irregularity created by the lava. Window placed in the corner looks awkward (i have nothing against windows in caves. They are mad rad).
@Pizza Nice work. The cliff has some really nice shapes. I'm bit confused about the prematurely ending road. Otherwise, the map is superb in its work with given resources and in terms of business.

@Cap Lol I didn't think about furniture being on the bottom wall as well. But if it was, would it even be visible? I placed the window there because it makes no sense whatsoever. Otherwise you're probs right about the lava and the characters. I'm not gonna change the characters cos everyone's just gonna have to be different styles. By the way this (probably) won't be in the game. ;)

I guessed, it won't. I meant like a top of wardrobe or bunker bed or something natural like these rocky spikes @Egypt uses. It's not always necessary and sometimes it can look odd, but in your case, they have no reason to live on both sides of the Lava, cuz they have unused space in the bottom parts of their place. It probably wouldn't be game's deal-breaker as it is hilarious that they live in a lava cave.

Choosing clock tower as theme wasn't my best idea ever. I don't know what to do myself. Maybe this is like a challenge feeling.

@Cap_H: Your new theme is very flattering. I guess I'm more than a little obligated to participate now, aren't I?

I'm going to put together a Gameboy chipset and see what I can bring to the table with that.

Finally, a volcano lair complete with evil overlord and heroes to the rescue.





I'm afraid I don't have the resources necessary for the clock tower, so I'm going to sit that one out. But I'll be back for the next theme for sure. This topic has been a great inspiration to improve and experiment with my mapping!

Alright, so I ran with it more as a pixel art/tile set creation challenge rather than a mapping challenge, but this is what I came up with.

I rushed the backdrop which is why it looks crappy.
