[UNITY] UNITY 5 IS OUT
Posts
"Unity 5 is here and with it, our all-new free version, Unity 5 Personal Edition!"
Unity 5 Personal Edition is for any individual or small team that earned/received less than US$ 100,000 in revenue/funding in the last fiscal year. Is that you?
So yeah, Unity 5 is now out. You know that engine that you always intended to try out but never got around to it besides you have to finish off that RM2k3 project you've been working on and well there are a few other things you wanted to experiment with first plus there was that commitment to that community project you'd said you do but you totally will try out Unity someday soon!
Well, the next big version is out now.
What's your excuse for not trying it out? Does anyone have any extensive experience with it and are willing to write up some introductory tutorials? What about a Unity event, collab, or workshop? does that sound appealing?
Anyone try out Unity 5 yet?

SOMEONE STEPPED UP TO THE CHALLENGE! OMG!
Or am I ruining the joke? XD

We totally need somebody called "unreal" to ask questions about Unity.

I doubt they'll teach me how to use Unity 5 at school. We'll have to stay with the previous version XD
When I learn to use Unity I might submit some tutorials. :)

Everybody might already know this, but I'm a really big fan of Unity! the engine is great too XD
The kinds of games I make don't really take advantage of a lot of the new Unity features, but I can definitely use all of the really nice features that used to be Pro-only, like the Profiler, easy version control, and maybe the better shadows and lighting. (The only thing that bugs me is the "dark mode" skin still being locked to Pro users ;_;)
I like all these free new things game makers are getting access too :D

I use Unity for my commercial games development, but I'm too busy at the moment to write tutorials unfortunately.
Oh yea, I could definitely write some intro tutorials for it... for now, I'd definitely recommend http://www.unity3dstudent.com/ . They might be a little out of date, but the Modules are a pretty good way to at least get a first impression and get your hands dirty quickly.
It's hard to write a general Unity tutorial because you first need to learn C#, and then you can pretty much make anything. Given a more specific problem space (how to make a platformer, for instance), it's easier to write a tutorial. What do we want a tutorial about?
Speaking of which, I wonder when my UE4 tutorial will be approved...

It will be approved when you stop being Colonel.
I used to give introductory lessons on Unity, just to get people familiar to the engine, how it works, etc. I'd usually cover a few basic things:
The basic idea is just to give people enough to play around with and see if they like it :) After that I might get into specific or genre-centric tutorials. I have a lot of my old stuff for my lessons around somewhere probably, I just need to find it...
- Walk 'em through the basics of the editor - scene view, inspector, hierarchy, etc.
- Drag some basic objects into the scene view, attach child objects, attach components to 'em like the FPS controller or some particle effects
- Play around with some of the variables in the inspector (adjusting move speed, etc.) to show how variable adjusting works
- Show off a basic C# script, explain the basics behind the Update loop, maybe make some simple edits
- Show off some advanced premade stuff to reveal what can be done with the engine

If there's a game that serves best as a intro to a nonspecific engine it's probably a 2d shooter. You control a player character with simple inputs, there are enemies, and both sides shoot things. The physics are minimal and collision and the game rules are super simple. I remember following a youtube video tutorial to make one in Unity ages ago but I never took it beyond that and have forgotten 99% of everything I learned.
now imagine a collab where everyone would make a single level of a shooter but introduce their own aesthetic and tweaks to the mechanics, and then someone like slash combining them all into a single mishmash game. Super RMN Shooter!

Not that I can tell!
*Edit: I'm just finding it hilarious that it actually happened.

Hahaha, we could do that pretty easy :D
That was one of our first class projects, actually - there used to be a built-in 2.5D tutorial for Unity, and everyone had 2 weeks to tweak it and make it unique - either adding new art, or designing new levels, or adding custom gameplay code. At the end, everyone had different a different game - some had jetpacks, some had underwater levels - it was a really cool way to get started :)
(I actually still have mine online~)
The Game Engine War's in full swing. Looking forward to Enterbrain releasing RPG Maker VX Ace Omega tomorrow.
(Naturally, it'll be a step sideways)

I'm just adding a random word (like RPG Maker VX -> RPG Maker VX Ace) but that works too!
I never even considered that Enterbrain might break something out for the GDC. XD
