In summer we plan to make a game, me and my friend. It's supposed to be story-driven metroidvania with inventory. We aim for hand-drawn custom graphics too. Jumping and shooting is supposed to be good and fluent. There probably will be special abilities or modes (Bullet-time et cetera).
What do you think is the best engine to develop such a game in?

Well, Unity is free and by far the most powerful option listed. It supports more deployment platforms, too.

Problem with Unity is, that it is too good for our project. And my computer wouldn't be able to run it (I may have bought new by the summer, tho). My friendo made some smaller projects with Game maker and I'm big fan of Construct as it is superbly overlooked by devs(or used to be) and I'm sucker for nice websites.

If you've already made up your mind, then why did you put up a poll?

Cuz It interests me and there are months to change it. The thing with Unity is that I track it on Moddb and its alwaz annoying how there is million new games using it every day. Too mainstream, ya know.

I've always wondered why nobody writes novels with a hammer and chisel on stone tablets anymore. Computers are so mainstream...
When it comes to game engines, or computer systems, mainstream is good. More support, more resources, more utilities, more exposure, etc etc

Unlike my music collection, which is so underground geologists are using it to predict planetary core formation in their models.

Game Maker is probably powerful enough to handle a metroidvania kind of game. The original Spelunky was very good, and was also made in GM. If that runs on your computer, there ya go.

That said, avoiding Unity because it's too mainstream is going to hurt you in the long run. I don't think the hipster points you get for using a less popular engine are going to outweigh the judgement points you lose for using a less popular engine, so you might as well just use the one that works best for you :D

I assume you'd rather your game become popular because of the design, and not because of the engine, eh?

Both of you got the truth. Of course I want to be renowned for my fabulous game design. And it's better to use Windows cuz it can run RM games. I'm open. Libertarian. I would have put Unity amongst others in this poll, If I had been against its use.
And right now the only reason you gave me is that it is superior, Sail
I know Slash uses it for simple clever games. My question is, Isn't a bit of waste to use such a powerhouse for such a semi-simple thing like our metroidvania is gonna be? Does it have any benefit to use it for simple 2d concepts?
They are silly questions, but i want to know your opinion. For me making simple game in Unite would be preparation for something more complex.

And don't take me too serious if i sound so. I write rather bullsith sometimes (always).
My gut instinct is that you are underestimating the complexity of developing a metroidvania, so play it wise and go with the most powerful engine you can feasibly handle.
