"Nintendo to Create Mobile Games, New 'NX' Game System"
Nintendo is teaming up with online gaming firm DeNA Co. Ltd. to develop and operate gaming apps. They will NOT be porting existing titles to the mobile platform, but will be making new games that leverage the mobile ecosystem. However, Nintendo's IP will be available. Marioville anyone? Angry Kongs? Clash of Kirbys?
(If they wanted to make mad bank, just make a Pokemon F2P MMO.)
I think this is a pretty cool move, even though almost everyone saw it coming.
They are also currently developing NX, a new gaming platform, but declined to give further details.

It's a smart move, given where games are mostly headed.
Still feels weird to me, but I'm a child of the console era and all that XD

I guess one day I'll need to replace my lost mobile (I haven't had one for almost two years now) if only to play some games. Foo. :<
I can't wait to play Mario games with microtransactions!
Mobile games don't interest me much. I'm thinking of getting Final Fantasy Record Keeper and... That's it. That's the only mobile game that's interested me at all in all these years.
They should just make a virtual console app or something. That's something I might show some interest in, since I have VC games but I don't want to cart my stupid 2DS everywhere just to play them for 5 minutes.

I've played a small number of them. Angry Birds (and all of its spinoffs) of course (meh), Angry Birds Epic (awesome casual RPG!! everyone should get this), MyBrute (same as the online version, but mobile), and I tried a few of the others. I haven't played any sort of Clash of Clans type games, though, which seem to be all the rage these days. I haven't played any of those match-3 games either (Candy Crash Soda or whatever), or PlaceVilles.
I did buy one mobile game: Dragon Quest V. Everyone was raving about it, but so far it sucks. Spent like $15 too. :\

Yea, this makes sense. I think it has a lot of potential, since they're making original, exclusive games designed for mobile and not just ports. I'm interested in what they do for pricing. Squaresoft sells its mobile ports at a premium - $16 for FF6, a port of a game that wasn't designed for mobile - but if Nintendo designs games specifically for phones, well, they have the reputation to sell mobile Mario games that cost $10. If they're really fun, maybe that breaks down the barriers for other lesser-known devs to charge more for well-designed phone games!
Anyway, more games is cool :) I just hope they're not the pay-to-win type.

Personally, I was hoping for Nintendophone.
I§'m bit worried about this decision as it can slowly bring an end to handhelds. On the other hand I want to see these aces Nintendo can throw into the ring. Flappy Kirbird, Metroid Run, Real Karts 3, Fruit Zelda...

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

author=Cap_HPretty much the entire console market is dying out in favor of these, especially in Japan, which is probably why Nintendo is making a move like this.

That article is the most poisonous thing I have ever read in my life.
"Now I need to figure out what emotions I want to monetize," he said.
People like this shouldn't be allowed to design games anymore. Fucking god forsaken pigs. Fuck sakes. FUCK.
EDIT: Yes, the article in question was designed to be as evil as possible. But it's pretty obvious that this is how most popular F2P mobile games are designed. Which is why I have 0 respect for the medium.

back in my day, we had to grind for all of our pretend money in games! kids these days don't know how easy they got it.
The thing that disturb me the most, is that you can turn a fun, challenging game into a cash grab in so little steps. I wonder if a guy like that was in charge of dungeon keepers mobile fiasco.
author=LockeZSo... have they ported any arcade games to mobile thingies and had you pay by the credit like the original machine? Cuz that kinda seems a missed opportunity if they haven't.author=PizzaTo be fair, the first two Mario games both had microtransactions.

author=Ratty524Nintendo abandoning their own devices seems unlikely, but yeah, I can't help but notice that "retires from/downsizes console/handheld market to make forgettable mobile games/shoddy mobile ports" is the new "retires from arcade/console market to make gambling machines" as far as pitiful gaming company fates go.author=Cap_HPretty much the entire console market is dying out in favor of these, especially in Japan, which is probably why Nintendo is making a move like this.

I like how we've come full circle in that companies are monetizing shitty little arcade games and making mad bank, just like the 70s.
...does this mean a crash is coming?

What kind of crash are we talking about?
the console model and pc is outdated now, releases are small and lots of free indie devs like us offering things for free.
It's meant to happen, keep new customers coming in and larger loyal fanbase.

the console model and pc is outdated now
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt with the whole "consoles are outdated" thing, because people have been yammering on about that since the late days of the PS2, but it takes some serious ignorance to say that "PC is outdated".
It's not even that I need to hear a justification. It's just incorrect to say. You can look on any storefront or "upcoming games" list and 90% of the titles are being released on PCs. The entire games hardware industry is (and has been) built around playing catch up with the latest PC technology since the NES days. It's frankly pretty dumb to suggest that in the face of services like Steam, and knowing the truth that we design games with PCs, that the PC would ever stop being a huge gaming platform.
Basically I just don't buy it when anybody sees the success of a few select mobile kingpins and says "mobile is the future of gaming" or "soon all games will be released on phones and nothing else" because I find it pretty hard to buy that in a climate where people are still designing games for the Commodore 64.
tl;dr mobile will eventually kill handhelds, sure (good riddance), but they'll never kill the PC and I honestly believe they'll never kill off consoles either, for a whole host of other reasons.
I loved the top level stuff in the Mario 3 article but I think it delves too much in making a new game than modifying the original. Mario 3 never had a crafting system or randomly generated levels, at what point are you talking about your own Mario game instead of changing Mario 3? I think a more earnest Mario 3 edit would be the same start as in that article: The limit on how much you can play is your lives count, over time you would regenerate lives, or you can spend money to get some right away. I'd cap the free lives to 5 or so, just so leaving the game for a week doesn't net you enough lives to power through a world.
How the player gets lives would have to be heavily restricted to prevent farming. A 1-up mushroom from a stage can only be collected once, trying to collect it again would only give a coin. Killing enemies in a row is an easily abused way to get lives so either getting a life this way would have to be removed or the stages where this is possible be changed to prevent farming. Super Mario Bros VS did this in it's version of Mario 1 3-1, the koopa you'd farm lives off of was replaced with a goomba. The end of level card would translate into coins as well instead of lives.
Now what about coins themselves? Go with the article, remove the 100 coins = +1 lives, remove the coin cap and make a Toad store where the player can buy more lives or other inventory items for coins. The store would be accessible when the player isn't in a stage, including when the player has zero lives. The player would buy coins with real money and then use their coins to buy lives or whatnot. The most broken of items like the P-Wing would either be extremely expensive or not available at all in the store.
The game's progression would have to be changed some. Warp whistles are right out. I'd probably make all stages required to beat the game, no skipping 1-3 or 1-4! More levels for the player to experience (and die and need more lives!). Now for the endgame I'd take a lesson learned from arcades and prevent the player from stumbling their way across the finish line. Starting World 8 removes the regenerating lives mechanism, once you start the first tanks level there's no more free lives. You can, of course, still buy lives, but not playing will not net you any more lives. Once you hit zero lives you get GAME OVER and are given a choice of restarting all of world 8 with five lives (once regenerated / the tank level is started), tanks and boats and airships included, or buying more lives to continue where you died last. If you want to beat Bowser and save the Princess you gotta get good (or pay up)!
I can totally see this as a mobile game now while still being Mario 3. If I ever saw this I'd uninstall it immediately, fuck mobile gaming.

Video Game Crash of 1983
Maybe it's not going to be that severe, but I'm already seeing some parallels. The main reason consumers are moving to mobile gaming is because it's accessible. It can do more than just play video games (making it a better investment compared to gaming consoles), with the added bonus of being able to play something from anywhere.
In the early 1980's home computers proved to be the better investment compared to home consoles for the same reason minus portability, so consumers moved towards that over game consoles back then.
