Would it still be worth it to get it through other ways for the plugins and other resources out there that might not be compatible with the new steam version they just released?
I've been thinking about picking up an RPGmaker of sorts for my hobby(since I am sorta making games for a hobby rather than being serious) and it was coming down to either getting vx ace off of steam(which would be pricey) or getting a hold of 2k3 from the few ways one could get it right before the official release on steam yesterday.
It might just be a bit too early to be asking this since they only did just release 2k3 yesterday on steam but just for the sake of plugins and other custom things, would it be worth it to get it officially or no? It's very much cheaper than vx ace would be on steam.

Well VX Ace has been on -75% daily deals more than once. So if waiting is something that you want to do that might be the way to go.
I've seen Ace down to pretty low before, during Steam sales or in Humble bundles (I've had about... 4/5 copies of Ace since it came out, some accidentally XD ). If you want to use scripts and the like Ace would be best for you.
Actually, I'd recommend going and playing a few 4-5 star games from each of the engines you want to check out to see what they're capable of. That way you'd be able to see what can be done in them. Also, Ace has a Lite version which is free to use. You can download it off the RMW website. Granted, it has a lot of limitations, including that it doesn't allow scripting, but it will give you the basic idea of what you can do in the program without scripts and you can check through the script areas of RMN and RMW to see what scripts are available, too.
