I NEED HELP WITH REVIEWING GAMES TO REVIEW THEM BETTER

Posts

Pages: 1
Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I need help with a review. It got denied because I gave it a 4 out of 5, and the community is not like to accept games with that rating that have spelling, and grammar errors. I am unsure how many stars I should have given it, or what to do. Does anyone know how to help me with this?

The rating doesn't usually matter. But the spelling and grammar needs to be fixed. In addition you need to present a good case for giving the game this score.

I have wrote a 2 star review for a game that already had a 3.5 star review. So I made sure I justified my score in my argument in a very clear manner.

PM me the review and I'll let you know how I think it could be improved. I get 95% of the stuff I submit accepted by this site, so I have a decent idea about about they're looking for.

There are a few articles on reviewing, I will edit them in in a moment.

And some basic outline and little indepth stuff by solus the heir - which is probably what should help you the most.

How to get more words going by yours libby

Possible problems:

- Bad presentation (typos, bad formation, no introduction/summary or ending paragraph)

- Points without context (no examples, no descriptions, no reasoning as to why you think it is a certain way)

- Subjective stance (not trying to be objective, attack creator or pander creator)

- covering too little of the game

Good luck!

I doubt reviews get denied just because of the rating. Or, if they do, it is because the rating is not justified, given what is written in the review. The best advise I can give on this point is to really think about what you're saying.

As an example, perhaps you're providing legitimate complaints against the game. Maybe you made those complaints to be more major than they actually are. So, either re-think how to word them to more properly reflect your game-experience, or, if you realize that they really are as bad as you make them out to be, re-consider that aspect of the game, and adjust the score if needed.

As for spelling/grammar issues, it sounds like you might want to look into having somebody proofread it, and make suggestions/corrections that would keep with the essence of what you're attempting to relay. Kinda like how the description thread works, now that I think about it.

*Edit: Darigaaz, this post was slow.
Well, I was already quoted in lengths, so there is little to add (strangely, the articles later are linked in the first one, hehe)

But here too you can feel free to pm me your draft if you are still at a loss.
Kory should be much enough of a help already, though.

And yes, what Marrend said. It likely is that you covered too little of merits of the game while focusing on its flaws to justify a very high rating. Or it was just incredibly fun despite the flaws - which you can point out just the same.
There is quite some freedom to take, so long as you can explain your stance.
Thank you Kylaila. I am probably going to do an unrated review of the game though.
Look, Rose, from having seen the review in question the issue was your spelling and grammar (a bit) but mostly that you were giving a 4-star rating to a game that other reviewers (who have been writing reviews for ages and known to write good reviews) had given much lower scores, and recently at that.

There'd be a question as to whether you had a bias towards the game dev in that case, especially when you hadn't really added much to the review beyond lines like "I know it's full of spelling errors but the story was good" 4/5 for writing. It did sound a bit like favouritism or ignoring the bad points to give good ratings.

What you need to do in cases like this is make your case - point out why you're giving those points. You can't just say "Oh, but the gameplay was good and the battles were interesting", you have to say why. To do this properly, it's a good idea to give a few examples.

Battles were fun and the on-map gameplay was interesting
vs
Battles forced you to think on your feet and with the limited amount of skills, you really had to rely on buffing yourself in order to take down the monsters. This could have been boring if x hadn't included perpetual buffs and a very fun way of applying them - by adding runes to your weaponry out of battle. The different runes... and so on.

With the above example, instead of just telling 'this was good', you're giving people an idea as to why you thought it was good, as well as making prospective players interested in trying it out for themselves and seeing it in action.

Check out that article and make use of it. It should help. Good luck!
