[EVENT] GOLDEN AGE OF GAME MAK

So a new event is on it's way, starting Saturday and running for a week!
Check out the event page here: http://rpgmaker.net/events/goldenage/

Not everyone is doing the IGMC and we decided to keep idle hands busy by offering up an event of our own in celebration of the recent release of RM2K.

Jump on in if you've the time, and earn yourself a badge.

I miss the regular events where an odd theme was revealed at the start and you can tackle it from any way.
You mean like the last one we had?
Are you referring to this one? http://rpgmaker.net/events/2015birthday/ it was no-holds-barred, but also only 8 hours. I'm afraid a more typical 2/3 week cycle fits even the busiest of schedules. The one right before it was yet another "you must only use programmers' tarpit tools" event. And then there was the McBacon jam with the team shuffle which, while interesting (I even tried to sign up) resulted in scheduling problems. And that's about it for this year.

I've still got that nostalgic Game Frost badge from 2009/2010 where I released a piece of shit.
I'm sure we'll have a Halloween event this year or a Christmas one. Like we do every year. Which are open for all engines, no holds barred, as per usual.

The 2k3 event and this one are based around the core engines, so not allowing extras makes sense. We're relaxing a little on the graphical side this time because of how much of an issue it was last time, but part of the challenge (and draw) is using just the engine.
That's not really much, and it's not like I can just make an event because then I couldn't participate in it. You completely skipped the spring-themed event you've had in the past, too. The limitation of this event seems unfortunate. I went around checking the landscape of other tools. RPG Maker is already most peoples' comfort zones here while there's engines that people haven't ever heard of and most won't even try.

That recent case of GG Maker is a good example, it might look ugly but it has a lot of features people don't use properly. There's even a free version most are unaware of. The library of MS paint cartoons on their website illustrates how little a chance they're given. So then an event like this comes out to reinforce an already popular engine. An event where everything but RPG Maker is accepted would probably sadly not work, people wouldn't bother trying to ascend to stronger engines in the first place. I was talking to Zeigfried about this recently, so it is mostly just frustration seeing yet another event like this so soon after the 2k3 one.
A GG Maker event might also be a great idea. It'd also encourage people to get out of their comfort zones.

We had already had this event planned a while back, which is why we're holding it now.

That said, I was holding off from saying anything but I was planning the Halloween event to be non-RM based, so that people could actually try out other makers. I'm also going to throw cash in the kitty for that one, so that there's an incentive for people to try. Not a huge amount but I figure a bit would be cool. It'd be month-long, of course, and with all the Humble Bundle game makers that people have got on their hands, it's perfect timing. Just don't want to make it during the IGMC, and I won't be free til October due to judging.

Hopefully a lot of people take part in it because I think it'll be a lot of fun. (There'll also be a focus on sharing information about things - and I was considering a tutorial drive for the engines that don't have many, too.)
why can't you make an event and also participate in it? I wasn't aware that there was a rule saying you can't participate in events you create.

Also, isn't a "no holds barred use any maker you want" kind of the default operating mantra around here? What would differentiate an event from the standard fare? But by all means, if you have a wacky theme you want people to collaborate or compete on in game-making for a specified time limit, let me know! I am willing to help out with the promotion and organization (not judging though - I am a terrible judge). But "no holds barred use any maker you want" is the standard, and to that effect there was a Release Something! event recently.

As for the timing of the 2k event being so close to the 2k3 event, it turns out the official release of 2k3 (which inspired the 2k3 event) was so close to the release of 2k (which inspires this 2k event). So go figure.

sailerius talked about holding an Unreal map making event, after Unreal changed its pricing structure to be much more accessible, but no one stepped up to actually realize it. slash talked about holding a Unity event when Unity 5 came out, but nothing materialized there, either. You guys can't expect me to do everything around here like I used to (or still want to :( )

E:
the point being, you can complain about the existence of this event if you want to, I guess.

The game development events that RMN runs generally have a rule where if an event has judges that select a winner then games where a judge is involved with the development of is not eligible for prizes granted via judging. This is to minimize conflicts of interest in the judging. There's no rule that judges can't partake in the event and even get the participation achievements because gammak must flow. There's nothing about the creator of events not taking part but they are usually a judge if it's a 'get judged' kind of event.
pffft. of the dozens of events I've made, I've judged 1 (or maybe 2?).
Yeah but you don't make many events that generally involve judging! Well, not in the "I'ma gonna win!" kind that I meant, more of the "min standards" kind.

btw how's Befuddle Quest 7 coming along?
*sigh*

I'm almost started.
Thinking about it further, I entered events to complete games so there'd be real stuff for my RPG20XX engine, but it may be pointless. It would follow that I have the same problem as a lot of these unknown engines with there being no example games. However, I have resorted to making the games myself.

If you were planning a "use everything but RPG Maker *" event near Halloween, you could make it where the theme is to invent a new gameplay system not possible previously and call it the Mad Science Expo. The problem is that around the fall, I wouldn't really have time to enter something like that with a new game project, but I could judge entries.
We're actually considering something that encourages experimentation for it. ^.^

That said, you could do an event like the one now, where there's no 'winner' bar those that meet certain standards. That way you can also compete and win badges. Granted, if there's a placing prize you can't compete if you're a judge, but then you just ask others to be judges or use the voting feature on the game page to allow the actual contestants/community to be the judges. Hell, a Round-Robin Arena-esque type thing where the community judges between two games at a time, then moves up a ladder to find the ultimate winners would work too. ^.^

I'm happy to support people, too, in running contests. Just... not during August/Sept this year. Gonna be hella busy. ^.^;
I already asked this on the event page, but since no-one has responded yet I might as well ask here: Does RPG Tsukuru 2000 require changing the system's locale to Japanese? I'd like to join this event, but I don't feel like bothering about that.
Only if you have the Japanese version and not the illegal English version (which is what we are talking about when we refer to TsuK).
I'll think about joining, then. Another stupid question: does the RTP come with the install?
Depends where you get it from, I guess. We don't offer the install on RMN since it is illegal, but google is a good friend.
Well, I've found a download that seems to be only 3 megabytes big, so I'm guessing the RTP comes separate with it. Thanks for the help, Liberty.
