WHICH CASTLEVANIA GAME IS YOUR FAVORITE?
Posts

Fixed.
If I could play a game that had SotN's aesthetics and metroidvania elements, CV4's controls, and was basically a redo of Simon's Quest, I would need no other Castlevania.
I'd like to make a Simon's Quest remake/reboot and have some ideas written down... my best option would be a top down Action RPG made in RM2k3 but the amount of coding it would require is quite daunting.
If a programmer out there wants to make a Castlevania game in any engine, I'd gladly join the team. There are so many fangames I'd like to see made :3
so I picked up SotN again (like, the single reason I have a Vita besides P4G) because of this thread, and like
I love how many things there are to just find in this game. I could see a few of these things being frustrating for new players, of course, especially ones expecting the 'find an upgrade' kind of solution, but at least most of those things are non-essential; the pocketwatch thing just gets you some fake armour, the switch (LET'S PRESS IT AND SEE) grabs you some items, too, and the Holy Icon hidden beenath that frustrating breakable floor isn't progress-critical either, for all that it's really nice to have.
a lot of metroidvania games feel pretty uniform, since they boil the formula down to a point where the movement powers and other upgrades you find are basically only used in a single specific way. since SotN came along before any of that was even a thing, I feel like it was a bit more free to have weirder interactions; enemies with strange gimmicks, hidden passages inside hidden passages, tiny setpieces like the confessional in the church, the whole thing with the super jump and the Librarian... it's just a super dense game, and even having beaten it multiple times I still get the sense that I'm exploring.
and yeah, the aesthetic is amazing. I want to live in Dracula's castle, it is the most gorgeously-decorated place.
also there are few game songs that get that rainy-night mood in the same way this does. I love it.

Well, since we're posting our favorites...
EDIT: Also i should mention very few videogame sountracks enchant me to the point where i remember each track by name, and this one's pretty much THE example.

I think the amount of variety is one of the huge points for me. a lot of the area music is absolutely nothing like what you'd expect, but none of it seems to clash -- instead, it kind of takes the atmosphere in another direction. the coliseum feels much sportier for the addition of this bright guitar theme.

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

The instrumentation is a bit crap, but Bloodlines had some kickass tunes:
Which Castlevania Game is your favorite?: Fuck the games, it's about the music, mannnn!

Outside of symphony i have to agree that the sinking old sanctuary was my favorite.
I really love Judgment's remix of Mad Forest:

And my favorite from SotN is Crystal Teardrops, the caverns' theme. Dat reverbed piano:

Hmmm, Castlevania does have some simply amazing music all around. I can't really name one of the older games that have disappointed me in terms of music. Perhaps it would be a good idea to further discuss this in a topic about Castlevania's top notch score?

You really think this forum needs TWO Castlevania topics?
Hah, not really. I'm not too crazy about flooding a forum board with the same, or a similar, subject. But, I was thinking maybe one that's more generally music-based, that way it can include more of a variety.

Or we can just talk about it here like we were already
This conversation about whether or not we should separate this thread into two different threads belongs in its own thread.
So, I haven't played that many Metroidvanias, and I've only played one Castlevania game before - Circle of the Moon. I had a pretty good time with it! What would you recommend I play next. I know SotN is the one everyone really loves, is that a good place to start?

SotN is kind of the Platonic Ideal of metroidvania Castlevania games, so yeah, play that shit.

well alright thenIt's on the original Playstation? I can probably figure that out...
On the PSX, yes, and it's also been released on X360 and PSP in North America :)
But if you enjoyed playing CotM on the GBA you could also try Aria of Sorrow.

Honestly, I'd say that any of the GBA Castlevanias or Symphony of the Night would be your best start. I think that they are probably the most intriguing Metroidvanias. However, I would also suggest trying one from the DS age as well. While I'm not particularly fond of that group of Metroidvanias, they're still enjoyable to play, and they may appeal to you more than they did me.
In short, I would suggest trying an 'old-age' Metroidvania (GBA, SOTN) and a 'new-age' one (DS).
Ultimately, I suggest going with whichever one appeals to you most, and having fun with it~
