SUIKODEN SERIES ON PSN

As a UK resident, finally getting to complete a copy of Suikoden II when it was released on Playstation Network made me realise how damn good the series really was - my only experiences had been the original and 4, and the second instalment just blew me away with its quality of writing and scope. I'm currently playing through 3, and loving that too. Is anybody else rediscovering the series on PSN at the moment?
Not me, but then I've been on the Suikoden train since around the time I came out, so...

^.^

II is definitely my favourite, with V and III not far behind. I even paid over $200 for my own copy of the game. Hell, it's one of my favourite games. Love~ Much love~

We need a Suikoden VI. ;.;
I'm hoping that all these digital releases are leading up to them announcing VI!
Do remember: Konami disbanded the Suikoden team. They released a Genso Suikoden game for PSP back in 2011ish, and it was terrible. So any more Suikoden games are likely to be just as terrible, especially with Konami's decision making lately.

If you want something similar, try Exit Fate, a beautiful game made in RPGMaker. Hell, make your own game inspired by it, its likely to be better than whatever Konami's gonna try to milk out of the name next.
Actually, I believe they disbanded the original group after III (or was it IV?). The handheld games... not great. I didn't hate the DS one, I just don't think it should ever have been considered a Suikoden game. :/

I can still wish for VI, though, but the chances are quite low. Maybe in the future they'll look back and think 'hey, what if we... did this~' or maybe the original group will get back together and make a game that's an homage to the series (and answer some of the mysteries that linger). We can but hope.

As long as they don't do what Capcom is doing to Breath of Fire... ;.;
The best hope for it would be something similar to what the Megaman and Castlevania creators are doing, the general 'auteur' movement in Japan, but I don't think there was one singular mind behind it, so that is less likely.

Neither was Megaman or Castlevania but we still had these (so far) disappointing kickstarters.
I really like that the Suikoden Series is gaining popularity again~! Two is by far my favorite, the plot is outstanding and the main characters are great! (I might be odd for saying it, but Viktor and the Star Dragon Sword are my two favorite characters and Luca was great!)

Unfortunately, yes, the original writer did leave after 3. (3 and 4 aren't all that great in my opinion and I still don't think Viktor should have been as willing to hand over the Star Dragon Sword as he was.) but 5 is pretty good, too. So, if I was to recommend any in the series to play, it would be 1, 2 and 5. Honestly, if/when we ever see a 6, my hopes for it aren't very high.
I think 3 gets a bad rap, sadly. The story itself was great, as was the way it was presented. The characters were interesting and pretty cool (and Geddoe team is best team). The main issue I had with it was the amount of back-tracking - you had to go through the same dungeons over and over again which dragged down the rest of the content quite a bit and made things feel very similar.

It is alleviated a little when you get Viki but that's a bit too far into the game, sadly. By then you're well and truly sick of the dungeons you have to go through.

I know some people didn't like the battle system - I'm not one of them. I rather like the teaming up aspect. I also enjoyed the skill teaching/enhancing and Area of Effect that spells now had. Moving around on the battle field was an interesting touch.

It at least feels more like a Suikoden than 4 did, and the characters/story was a lot more interesting, especially with the 'big bad' being ever-present in the story. If there is one thing the Suikoden series does well, it's presenting the nemesis of the games as :there:, and not some shadowy figure in the background.
why would suikoden 3 deserve a badly made sandwich?
Because it's past midnight and I can't spell with cold fingers. ^.^
It's been awhile since I played Suikoden III(so feel free to call me out if I am misremembering anything), but here's my thoughts on it.

The good:

The trinity system meant that more of the cast had screen time and we got to see more than one side of the games's conflicts.

The game introduced some of the mechanics (like the whole skill training system) that would get expanded upon in V.

It was clearly expanding on the myth arc that sadly got abandoned after 3.

The bad.

Some of the mapping was weird, like having to walk toward the camera to exit a room. Also requiring you to walk through one boring plain every time you wanted to get to you're castle. For reasons,

The races in this game seemed badly conceived. The lizards could have been replaced with the Kobolds, who also have the advantage of being cuter. The Ducks were just kind of there.

We had the option of choosing our protagonist! Too bad the game was like "Hugo's the protagonist! Yes he is! How dare you prefer Chris or Geddoe, they have their own runes damn it!"

This game gave us Kenji the Aerobics instructor, because I think they were running out of ideas for characters.

The war battles felt too small scale, there was no sense that your characters were actually in charge of an army rather than a bigger than normal group.

The war stories seemed to have gotten dropped for a "defend the against people trying to destoyed it" that's really only redeemed by number three of my good points.

The hero's have swords, Suikoden heroes should only ever wield blunt weapons. (I'm at least partially joking here.)

Well that's my two cents

Viktor didn't need the Star Dragon Sword anymore, plus the two never really got along anyway. He was probably looking for an excuse to get rid of it so he wouldn't have to put up with it's ego anymore.

edit:
Also we have Yuber whose face has "never been seen" despite being clearly visible. Also no Persmerga, not even a mention, despite Yuber's increased role.
No, Viktor didn't need the Star Dragon Sword any more, but knowing that it was an incarnation of the Night Rune (no, they did not get along whatsoever- pure comedy gold happened in their interactions) but still, the way it was handed over to Edge (yes, there were the vampires, but that's besides the point) seemed a little cheap to me.

And don't forget what they decided to have Yuber wear instead of his characteristic armor! I have no idea what they were thinking by not including Pesmerga, considering that he was supposed to be pursuing Yuber so the two could fight/kill each other.

I am one of those who did not like the battle system at all, as well.

I do agree with just about everything else you've said, though, especially in regard to the races- I'd have been happier seeing the flying squirrels' race being given attention, than the ducks just showing up. Plus yes, the Kobolds were aborable and had extremely cute attitudes. (Plus, indeed! Staves or another blunt weapon are sort of Suikoden's thing when it comes to the main protagonists' weapons.)

The whole being able to "choose the protagonist" thing just seemed gimmicky to me.

So in short, no, I did not like 3 at all.

But 4? Haha, I could write a book about all the things about it I didn't like.
Oh hell no, I loved Yuber's new style and it makes sense for him to mix it up when he's on the run from Pesmerga all the time. The new outfit must have done wonders considering the last two games Pesmerga was searching for 'a guy in black armour'. Change out of the armour and give Pessy the slip~

I do wish Pessy had made a show-in but I'm not too disappointed that he didn't.

I also loved the new races - the lizards had already been alluded to in Suikoden I and II and were great. Their militaristic nature worked with the story - something that would not have worked with kobolds who are a more laid-back people - and the ducks, while not the best race in the series, were a lot better than Nay-Kobolds. Or mermaids. Or the beavers. Besides, Sgt Joe is awesome-sauce. How could you not love him to bits?

Kenji vs Squid family... BEGIN! Seriously - the series has always had quirky characters. Like Zamza (dear lord, I hated that guy). Or the washer-woman from 1 with the annoying fetch quest, or the squirrels (they were only squirrel monsters guys, not a race of people. They were like Shiro and Bright - animals). At least Kenji had a purpose, even if it was "give titles" - said titles affecting battles a little.

The Tenkai in III was Thomas, and yes he had a sword but I can forgive him for that because it's Thomas. He's not had time to learn how to use a staff or the like (which take years to learn to wield effectively as a weapon, unlike a sword that yields almost instant results. It helps highlight his youth and inexperience with battles and weapons - his innocence - ) and given enough time he hits like a beast.

/me lets a single tear fall like an anvil

don't even talk to me about bof6
I'm pretty sure they were referenced in one of the books - I know Kanakan was and Chisa was too. And Lucia in II might have dropped a mention in passing. The links are tenuous but looking back after playing III I was like "Oh, that's what they meant."

I'll see if I can dig up the exact info.
