IT'S TIME TO DUEL! YU-GI-OH TOPIC
Posts
"Yu-Gi-Oh! (遊☆戯☆王 Yū-Gi-Ō!?, lit. "Game King") is a Japanese manga series about gaming written and illustrated by Kazuki Takahashi. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine between September 30, 1996 and March 8, 2004. The plot follows the story of a boy named Yugi Mutou, who solves the ancient Millennium Puzzle, and awakens a gambling alter-ego within his body that solves his conflicts using various games." -Wikipedia
This topic can be used to talk about the anime, the manga or the card game.
The original manga was relatively slice of life, where Yugi would use his Millenium Puzzle to awaken the pharao and challenge various crooks to Shadow Games that bring out the true nature of the people. Those were very diverse and absolutely nuts.
But what most know about the franchise is the game named Duel Monsters, which became the centerpoint as the mangaka was a huge fan of Magic: The Gathering. That game is based on egyptian summoners from 5000 years ago in-universe, which a rich guy named Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford for undubbers) brought into a card game in the modern time.
The anime has 5 series so far - the original series (Often called DM) is about Yugi Muto facing various mysteries and dangers such as the Millenium Items, the Egyptian Godsand the Shadow Realm.
GX is the second series, where Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki) enlists in the Duel Academy, where students learn about the game. He will also face the Sacred Beasts, the Society of Light and the Dark World.
5Ds is third in the list. Yusei Fudo lives in a world where the poor inhabitants of Satellite are being exploited by the high-class members of New Domino City, along with the mysteries around the Signers and the Ener-D. New in the series are Synchro Monsters, which are summoned with the cooperation of Tuner and Non-Tuner monsters. Also, Card games on Motorcycles.
ZeXaL is series number four, in which Yuma Tsukumo meets a mysterious being named Astral, who possesses high knowledge about dueling. This series brings Xyz monsters to the table, which are called by overlaying multiple monsters of the same level. Among them are the enigmatic Number cards, who can't be beaten by any monsters except the other Numbers.
Arc-V is the fifth and (as this moment) final series, starring Yuya Sakaki. The main feature in this are Action Duels, where duelists can move around on a field with their monsters and collect action cards. What is also new are Pendulum Monsters, which can be set on the sides of the field to summon lots of monsters at once. Furthermore, they return to the Extra Deck if destroyed, allowing you to Pendulum Summon them again.
Have fun and believe in the Heart of the Cards.

I thought that the idea of having diffrent game in every chapter of the manga was kinda neat!?
But cards games works too..

For the anime, I liked the original, but I stopped watching around the part with the Orichalcum or whatever stuff.
Loved GX, still my favourite out of the series I've watched. I liked the characters, the school theme and Jaden's Elemental Hero deck kept things interesting because he got new fusions every few episodes.
5D felt like it was taking itself too serious, but it simply doesn't work out when your cartoon revolves around playing a children's card game.
I liked ZeXaL, but kinda stopped watching after episode 50 or so. Just couldn't really get into it.
Haven't watched Arc-V yet, will probably wait till it gets finished. Am too busy watching other anime currently.
Never played Yu-Gi-Oh competitively, but have played some of the handheld games. Spent tons of hours on those, unfortunately the last one that came out on 3DS was pretty lacking in content (they cut out a bunch of stuff from the Japanese version), and no news about a new game yet. Looks like they're giving up on handheld Yu-Gi-Oh games...

I wasn't ever really that big into the Yu-Gi-Oh anime. I watched the entire main series with Yugi, save for the Virtual World and Orichalcos arcs, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and I've seen a fair bit of GX which was pretty average. The rest of the stuff just honestly looks too silly for me- even GX got away from the sort of darker tones the original had, but it was still close enough to be neat.
My favourite arc is still Battle City, with Duelist Kingdom coming in a close second. Nostalgia is there, sure, but those are still fucking great storylines. Super fun stuff. I think besides those two, the (fifth?) arc was one that always stood out, with that purple-haired german guy and his badass Valkyrie Deck (which sadly was never made real). The concept of Yugi dueling someone who had an unfinished card that didn't work in the game's system in their deck was a really neat twist that always stands out.
I mostly played the card game, although I haven't played in ages and ages. Used to rock a Burn Deck, a Madolche Deck and a low level Water Deck. Fun times.
There were also a few sick Yu-Gi-Oh games, namely Dark Duel Stories (which I had as a kid and have weird nostalgia for) and that one on PS2... The Forbidden Kingdom or something?
Also, does anyone here use Dueling Network? We could set up some RMN games if so.

I can't really say anything about Arc-V as I didn't get enough interest to actually watch it. Heard it's terrible.
DM is the worst season I watched - although the artistic freedom they had with the physical card game not existing was kinda great, Yami Yugi is a bland, one-dimensional character and I couldn't stand the egyptian gods at all.
HOWEVER, Waking the Dragons give Yami Yugi more depth, builds up a more unique relation between him and normal Yugi and the villains around the big bad are more than just cannon fodder. So it's pretty much a saving grace for the series.
GX is amazing - you have interesting cards, a good mix of fun and serious episodes and meaningful character development.
5Ds starts out amazing - there's a low-class duelist everyone treats as trash and who fights for his friends against the discrimination they're facing. As soon as he gets the Stardust Dragon back, though, the series takes a massive nosedive with all the BS around chosen ones and having to grab stronger and stronger cards.
ZeXaL is kinda so-bad-its-good to me - there's so much wrong with it, but I love it anyways.

I am amazed at a world where people are just okay with "duelists" closing down major highways just for a card game. On motorbikes.
I thought those lanes are specifically built for Riding/Turbo Duels - there's far more roads than actually necessary.
The Ooriginal Yu-Gi-Oh episodes and Yu-Gi-Oh GX captivated my interest for a very long time just like Pokemon.
"Abridged" is the definitive edition of YuGiOh. Accept no substitutes.

I concur. No other version of Yu-Gi-Oh has captured the utter beauty of the abridged series.
Fuck destiny! I'm Seto Kaiba!
Yu-Gu-Oh! is a TGC that stole many of its ideas from Magic the Gathering. Unlike MTG, YUGIOH is a completely broken game. It releases cards that are way too powerful, and usually get banned in the next month (And what's up with banning cards!) Also, YUGIOH doesn't properly support multiple formats of its game. It only holds tournaments for Advanced format. And the game is only getting worse. The introduction of XYZ / Pendulum monsters has killed this game.
Only the original TV show is decent. GX is crap.
CARDGAMES ON MOTORCYCLESSSSSS!
Card Games on Motorcycles
The act of banning cards isn't a bad thing if you do it right, like Magic the Gathering - the banlist is kept simple by having a binary system (Banned/Not Banned), except in Vintage, where those cards are limited to one per deck (Sharazad, Chaos Orb and Falling Star are still banned).
It only gets a problem because tournament holders make quickbans at the first sign of imbalances - instead of figuring out ways to play around strong decks, they just wait for the banlist to make their move. The banlist is also too slow to unban cards that have been power crept into meaninglessness (I tried it, Gateway of the Six is too weak to handle Qliphs/Nekroz/Tellars even if it were at 3).
As I said, I hate the original series for lackluster content outside of the card game as Yami Yugi has no personality and secondary protagonists (other than Joey a bit) don't get any screentime. GX is great, 5Ds is wasted potential and ZeXaL is terrible in a fun way.

I remember I watched a huuuuge chunk of the original series, but never watched it fully. I forgot where I even left off in it, kinda want to go back and watch the whole thing. But uuuuugh...it sounds painful to go back and watch. Just like when I rewatched Digimon 1-4. >_>;;
GX I also watched a fair bit of and liked, but again never finished. I never watched YGO again after GX though.
I used to play the card game a lot years and years ago. Used to play at local tournaments, and I even once beat the #1 in the world at that time in a local tournament with my trusty Gravity Bind deck (nobody really liked that deck at all, but ya know what? Screw all those decks that focus purely on offense and nothing else! Ya'll can stick with your same kinds of decks, I'mma play against them and make sure you don't get to do anything while I burn you away with Lava Golem and such, or just win via Final Countdown with my 30,000+ Life Points!). Ended up quitting when nobody would play anymore unless I made a different deck, and when I did I could never win anyways because I have the worst luck. That and everyone else had ridiculously good stuff compared to me and I just couldn't do anything about them. >_>;;

I've enjoyed every bit of Yu-Gi-Oh! Because, shut up. I can screw the rules, I have green hair. My favorite series is Arc-V. My only problem is "Hey LittleKuriboh! When's the new episode?" And I'll always accept duel requests on Dueling Network.
author=kory_toombsPlaying the earlier (over 8 years ago now) not completely fucked versions of the game, this is all pretty much true from my experience with Yu-gi-oh.
