I wanted to add a little touch to a dungeon in my game. Whenever you are inside the dungeon, the player's party will always be inflicted with an unknown disease (simply a stronger slip damage/poison state). The state can only be removed once the player uses a Healing Crystal; outside of the dungeon.
The problem here is that I'm wondering if it would be annoying to have the red flash that keeps popping up on the screen whenever the player takes a step outside battles. I personally like the effect of danger it has, just not as much how VX has it implemented.
Also, I think that red flash might be an epilepsy warning, which I would like to avoid if possible.
What do you think I should do? Could I get away with this for one dungeon in my game? Would the red flashing bother you a lot?
My plan B is to have the state lower the physical and magic defense of the party instead.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: A good solution (for me) to this would be to adjust the frequency of the red flashing. If this is possible in any way shape or form, then I'd love to hear about it. I'd like to note that I am using RPG Maker VX and NOT Ace. I know this right here is best suited to be in the Help/Request forums. I just wanted to mention this for precision purposes.
EDIT II: Whoah! I just think I solved it myself, in a way, at least. The state no longer slips damage outside of battles. This means that there is no longer any red flashing going on when in that state! :D I guess my problem is solved in a way, but that doesn't mean that there will be some form of discussion about this mechanic as a whole.

The whole screen flashes. I've tried to look for a script that reduces the screen flashing, for example; 1 flash per 25 steps. No luck with that yet though.

Why do you need a script? Can't you just set the flash to flash sprite only?
I'm sorry, it's probably possible to change this in a default script which concerns this matter. I don't know much about scripting at all, so that's why I am afraid to tinker with codes. Especially now, since my game is so close to completion.
Or are you implying that you can set the flash to flash the sprites only in the editor?

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

WRT epilepsy: I understand that the problem in flashing for epileptic folks is if lights are very quickly alternating. I'd assume that a flash every few steps would be fairly low risk.
As a person without epilepsy, I'd be mildly perturbed, but it'd up the tension a bit, since it's the game reminding me of the suffering the characters are going through. Overall, I don't think it's going to make or break anything.

Glad we're on the same boat. It seems like this isn't much of a problem in ACE though. Just checked, and it seems that the screen only flashes every 20 steps, which I think is a better alternative.
Also, thanks for the fast replies everyone!

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

It sounds ugly, if nothing else. A soft red glow around the edges of the screen would hinder the player's visibility less, and be less distracting. It would look more like an ambient effect of the dungeon instead of a bad RPG Maker effect.
Something like this:
Here's a transparent version of the glow in the form of an image that you could just overlay on the screen as a fog effect.
Depending on how large you have your game's window size set to, this glow probably isn't the right size. If you want something like this in a different size and don't know how to create it yourself, let me know how big your game window is.

That's a nice effect, especially since its the actual dungeon causing the state, and nothing else. I already have an effect to show the disease (Blood Rain...Black Rain, whatever you want to call it). However, I'd like to try out your panorama of red glow.
My window size is the VX Default, which is 544 W & 416 H. So if it's not too much work for you, I'd like to request that panorama for my window size.

Using the Show Picture command is probably the simplest way to make it remain centered on the screen, rather than making it into a fog effect.
A red flash probably wouldn't be too much of an epilepsy issue. If you were rapidly alternating bright colors, you would need to worry about it, but if you're just using a dull red flash it probably won't be a trigger for the average epileptic. Severe epilepsy? Maybe. But anybody with epilepsy that bad probably doesn't use too many electronic devices.
"For about 3 percent of people with epilepsy, exposure to flashing lights at certain intensities or to certain visual patterns can trigger seizures. This condition is known as photosensitive epilepsy."
"The frequency or speed of flashing light that is most likely to cause seizures varies from person to person. Generally, flashing lights most likely to trigger seizures are between the frequency of 5 to 30 flashes per second (Hertz)."
Source: Epilepsy Foundation
I believe RPG Maker only flashes once or twice per second. I know you're trying out the glow effect instead, but this is helpful for future reference or for anybody else using the flashing effects.
