One man, five years... ONE GAME. Basically a guy manages to self teach himself to program a DS game from scratch. Originally it was going to be a GBA game, but he switched over when the DS came along. Quite a huge achievement considering most of us can barely create demos on RPG Maker, let alone full games.

Not sure if this should be in Game Design or here, but whatever.
I'm moving this to Videogames. This is awesome.
That's a neat tech demo. I don't see any gameplay in it though, and the first half of the video was pointless (generic labeled sprites and the guy with his shirt off :| )
He should've made an 8-bit platformer. Apparently people still dig those.
God I love this guy!

??? The whole second half is gameplay...

What's the game about?
Walking around is gameplay? I considered it more him showing off "look at these mobs of people run around" and "look at these custom graphics!". I didn't see anything in the video that made me think "This game looks fun, I want to play it!"
My next big project will now be to make an 8-bit platformer for the DS. And with more than one person working on it, it shall be done in 55 2 years!

Edit: Scratch that, I'm going to make a program that compiles rm2k/2k3 games to run on the DS. Now where to find a bunch of blank DS cartridges and something that can write to them?

THAT WAS AMAZING. TRULY FUCKING INCREDIBLE. THIS MAN IS AN INSPIRATION TO US ALL.

and I can't wait until it's out and someone rips those resources...
"bob's game" is a simple 2D adventure game, with focus on
story, puzzles, item collection, and communication instead
of repetitive battles with palette-swapped enemies.

Many characters (over 200 completely unique characters!)
have deep personalities that evolve, and many things
depend on the in-game time, day and weather.

It's the game I wanted to play when I was younger,
a vision I've been following since then.

To be honest, all I can really say is good for him!

I've watched some videos of this and thought it was REALLY BORING.
This guy pushes that GAME MADE BY ONE PERSON thing too much. He even goes to say that it's the largest game ever made by one person. Not to mention he's pretty arrogant, and by putting a video up of you working on your game for a month seems like an attempt at getting some e-points. Now I do know that he had to do everything himself, which is A LOT of work. The game certainly doesn't interest me, though. In the gameplay video, he boasted meaningless features like they were a huge deal.

But yeah, I couldn't do any better. It's not like we're being contacted by publishers.
Not sure quite what to think about this. It's cool that he made it all by himself, but the game looks a bit abstract and aimless.

Whatever though!

I think the game itself looks very quirky and cool.

However...

I agree. Three The Hard Way HAS TO BE LONGER and if it doesn't count as being made by one person, then hardly any RPG Maker game does, which I think is BS. except Sunset over Imdahl.

Although, on second thought, didn't he say it was the largest "console" game made by one person? Because that might be true...
This is damned impressive. Five years shows commitment and really gives hope for Games Design students such as myself, when I finish my second year on that degree (May coming up) I'll be the same age he was when he started making that game.

As for gameplay, as stated, it's about exploration, puzzles, and interacting with a living, breathing world. I'd have thought RPG fans would understand that if anyone. It comes across to me as a Sims/ Shenmue hybrid (minus the fighting). I might just hafta check this out.
From what i saw the game looks pretty awesome. Good for him.
From what I've seen of the guy, he's a little too enthusiastic about the whole one-man-project thing. He's also too paranoid and secretive about his project (he's been refusing to give any details because he's afraid someone's going to steal all of his ideas.) Plus, he's 100% convinced that he's got the biggest and best game possible and as such, does not respond to criticism at all.

I mean, its admirable that he's put so much effort into this, but his attitude and approach to marketing this game is really, really awful!

RPG Maker isn't from scratch. You can't compare rpg maker games to something someone coded from scratch. No RTP, no database, no templates. Just hard work. This guy is on a whole new level than us.

Also.. I wouldn't respond to criticism either if I did something -by myself- from scratch. What are RPG Makers professional game designers now? Even commercial projects for RM uses teams. LoH has a scripters, spriters, voice actors, composers, and etc. I agree whole heartedly that he shouldn't take criticism -especially- from RM Makers. That being said.. the game looks boring.

What.

There are always legitimate reasons for criticism, I hope you understand that. Even big companies like Bethesda and Valve take constructive criticism to help improve their games. It doesn't matter where RM guys are now, that has NOTHING to do with criticism. The "I coded my game from scratch, your criticism doesn't matter HA!" argument is the weakest one ever. And it doesn't look like he's taking advice from anyone.

It's all good that this guy had a vision for his game, and worked extremely hard to make it. But there's a line that you shouldn't cross when it comes to things like this. In my opinion, he went a little too far in boasting his abilities.
