[RMVX ACE] WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO PACKAGE A RM GAME DOWNLOAD?

Hey everyone, I'm curious how everyone handles their downloads and can maybe suggest a good way or the easiest way for someone to play your RM game(in this case VX ACE) that doesn't have the RTP downloaded.
I'm looking to have my download easy to handle for people outside our RM community, so I have to include the RTP, so far I have a RTP ZIP file in the project folder then I ZIP the project folder, and that's what I've been using to submit the game here or elsewhere.

I know it's easy for most of us here, because we either know or by now we probably have the VX ACE RTP downloaded.

Is there like an .exe program I can use like in rm2k3 but better? Maybe something I can customize like the icon for the desktop, etc?

Thanks for any help or insight!
Depends on the engine. If it's 2k/3, then just add all the RTP into the relevant folders. It's 30MB total, so it's not a big deal. Make sure to add the rtp flag in the ini file and it's good to go. Zip the folder itself up.

All they need to do is unzip and hit the exe to play. Simple.

For Ace and/MV, just add the files that are used and use the rtp flag in the ini file again. Zip up and share. Easy. (Though you could make an exe for Ace which is easier.)

For VX ace, is that done by the Compress Game Data option?

I haven't messed with it yet, so I'll try that or do the other thing.

Thanks Liberty! :)

What I've done more recently for VX Ace games is run Tsukihime's resource-checker (with a few edits) and create a self-extracting executable that has the necessary RTP files with it.

*Edit: Yes, a self-extracting executable would be produced via the Compress Data option.
I try to keep this as simple as possible. What I've done before is that I upload two versions; one that includes the RTP and one that doesn't.

Here's how I handle the packaging:
1. I compress the game using the editor's future (I've only made and uploaded games using VX so far). If I am going to package the version that includes the RTP, I check the "include RTP box". If I'm going to package the version that doesn't include the RTP, I simply don't check that box.
2. I package the exe file of the game into a winrar file (I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I do it anyway for some reason).

The reason why I package and upload two different versions is because there are people who already have the RTP installed; it's unnecessary to give them that extra file size for something that they have no need for.

Awesome guys, I appreciate the advice!

When I first got RPG Maker I thought there would be *no way* I would ask people to download a second file just to play my game.

Over time however I decided that downloading the RTP separately really isn't that big of a deal. I think the advantages outweigh the cons:

- Including RTP makes my game seem bigger in filesize than it really is. (The game I made with the Lite version was over 100 MB, whereas with the full version it's only a few MB. Only a few MB!! I loved that)
- File hosting. It's more convenient to host as small a file as possible, since it allows me to upload quickly not to mention some sites have filesize caps. The RTP is readily available on other sites, so there's no need to host it myself.
- Including RTP assumes the game is 100% finished, will never be revised, and not being playtested. (it also assumes the downloader will never play another RPG Maker game, and that you will never go on to make another game)
- I've already shown demos of my work so far to someone, so that person has the RTP already at this point. And a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

This is more geared towards outsiders of the RM community. I want the simplest download possible for other people who aren't as savvy as us.
I offer a lite version with no RTP and one with, for those that don't have it, while I play to people like us as well as my tester.

I don't mind asking people to download a second download, as I include instructions on what to do if one isn't familiar with rpgmaker games.
It's not a huge deal, but I would hate to think that my game wouldn't get played because of the fact.
This sounds like I think people are dumb and can't figure it out, which isn't my intent it's more about ease for everyone.
This of course does apply to more of a final, finished product that I can mass release to people outside the RM community.
"This is more geared towards outsiders of the RM community. I want the simplest download possible for other people who aren't as savvy as us." I know. I believed the same thing at first. For me the idea that others are forced to download an RTP seemed completely counter intuitive to the idea of game making. It seemed as though you're not making a standalone game, but rather user-made content that only other savvy RPG maker players have access to. But I no longer think this. Now I see RTP as potentially a benefit.

I guess there's no way to predict what the downloader will prefer, and it's possible for some downloaders to have the opposite view. So I guess it's a judgment call. Personally I lean RTP. I love the idea of my RPG being a bite size download.

p.s. I actually shared a project with someone on two occasions, and he didn't have RTP but downloaded the RTP because of me. So I think I made the right choice. Not only did RTP not prevent him from trying my game, him having the RTP benefits both of us moving forward.
