Alright, so, I'm doing an RM2k3 game and I wanted to spice up the backgrounds a bit because the normal, flat backgrounds are very boring. It's a face-on kind of battle view, like in the MOTHER series. Cognitive Dissonance, a MOTHER fangame, did it in RM2k3 and had a black background with moving patterns in it, which I'd love to learn to do. Ollimio has moving backgrounds as well.

I'd love to do something in the style of either of those. Does anyone know how I could do something like these with RM2k3?

(An example image for Cognitive Dissonance:)
The easiest way to have animated backgrounds would be: in the database, go to Terrain, and on the battle background graphic window, you'll see 'battle background' and 'background' if you select background, then you should be able to have to frames as the battle background, only problem is you can only have them scrolling horizontal or vertical. It can be used to a number of effects. But if you're after backgrounds that move like in Mother. Then perhaps you should look at trying to event a CBS.

Someone out there might have a better solution than me, though.

Wow, thank you!
One trick to realize when making the frames move is that the speed you're using is actually the number of pixels moved. Therefore, you can have your top frame cover up portions of your back frame to give the illusion of different pictures.

As an example to explain what I mean:
Let the top frame alternate between a transparent line and a black line.
Let the back frame be two different images, with the first image shown on lines 1, 3, 5, etc. and the second image on 2, 4, 6, etc.
Set the movement for the back frame to 1.
Watch as your two images alternate (covered partially by the black bars).

You can have images "animate" this way with images up to eight pixels wide, as that is as fast as the background can scroll.

To make the bars less obvious, you can also do a checkerboard type pattern.
