Amazon Lumberyard aims to help developers easily create high-quality games.

So it looks like Amazon is getting in on the booming "make free indie games in our engine" bandwagon in a big way. The big hook? the AWS (cloud services) AND twitch integration right into the engine.

This is way above and beyond my aspirations, but it might be worth checking out for those more ambitious devs around here. It is in BETA right now for the PC, with mobile and VR support coming soonish.

Anyone heard about this?

I read about it! Apparently it's a full expansion of the CryEngine toolkit, or something along those lines?

It's probably fantastic for people who are making beautiful 3D games, but I have no idea what the support is for 2D, and from what I've heard, the barrier to entry is high. It requires a pretty good level of programming knowledge and isn't necessarily the most user-friendly. Still, it's probably worth looking into, especially if you think you can take advantage of the Twitch & AWS integration in a really cool way.

I'll probably stick with Unity for now :P
I know very, very little about Lumberyard and still need to do more reading, but if it's really easy to integrate with AWS then I might give it some real consideration. I'm already knee-deep in a game with an AWS backend so I wouldn't want to redo all of that unless it'll save me an enormous amount of hassle.

Eh... Maybe not. Apparently it's Cryengine based. That's a bit much to learn.

What wood I do with this?

You haven't the chops to do anything with it.

Don't be a grumpy frog on a log.

Anyway, This seems pretty cool! Probably way beyond my league, but it's nice to see some cloud and twitch integration into this thing.
I'll stick to Unreal Engine 4.
It has full 2D support is free and very easy to use... :D

I like how they phrase it:

"Amazon Lumberyard is a free AAA game engine"

You can have the most powerful engine in the world, but if the developers use it for crap, then crap is what's coming out of it. Does the engine look amazing and powerful? Absolutely. But the people who are going to be able to use it and use it well are the people who already have successful games on the market. This isn't really an "indie" thing as much as it is a "small game developer with modest capital" thing.

Not to mention the "free" part:

"With Amazon Lumberyard, developers only pay standard AWS fees for the AWS services they choose to use. With Amazon GameLift, you simply pay for the standard AWS fees for Amazon EC2, Amazon EBS, and data transfer you actually use, plus a small fee per Daily Active User."

If your game uses any online multiplayer or cloud-based features, you're going to be paying a lot of miscellaneous fees. Yeah, making a single-player game is still free, but if you want any online functionality, you'd better have some income coming in.

This could be a great and powerful service, but all I see coming out of it are people getting frustrated about it being too hard to use, or about being charged "hidden" fees that are pretty clearly outlined all over the place. This looks like it has potential for professional game devs. But not amateur indie developers or hobbyists like most of us. On the bright side, this means that it won't pump Steam full of more cash-grabs like when RPG Maker added Steam integration. $14.99 for an indie RPG Maker game with RTP resources, anyone?
Lumberyard's terms allow you to run online games on private servers as well. You just can't use their competitors. AWS also has a pretty extensive free tier.
Downloaded the 10 gb zip, unpacked it to 40 gb, installed some required stuff it needed and then it just doesn't work, just gets stuck at the loading assets screen. Idk about this one. Just seems like another heavy ass unreal engine that's too much of a burden to switch over if you're already using the 2 other pretty much free engines.

I think it's pretty much designed with the professional studio work environment in mind. Those have computers specifically dedicated to run these type of programs, so I don't think any "general" computer would handle these well.
Idk where you get this idea from that there's some magical pc part I need when this comp is just fine with other industry standard programs. It's not like I'm using a 32 bit laptop or something.

Obviously it's not gonna be the hobbyist's rpgmaker equivalent program, I figured that much.
