The other rpgmaker site I was at died a little bit, so now you have to deal with me!
I've used all of the makers except VX and Ace, but seeing some of the things you can do in MV has piqued my interest! Look out for my lolrudra in the distant future!

Welcome to RMN!
And you should try VX ACE, it's the best :o

Besides the learning curve in mapping, the script support is simple and easy and the engine has a huge concrete base of scripts, resources and game development ideas already in place :D
This is coming from someone who messed with rpgmaker 2000/2k3 and XP forever. I'm pooping out games with VXace at this point it's so nice and easy to use.
I'd at least recommend trying it out(but using the VXace lite isn't the best way to learn with it because of the limitations, so maybe pirate it before purchase) But it's definitely worth the cash and I hear you can get it cheap on Steam Sales or in a amazon bundle(where I got mine)
It's just a really solid engine :)

Stuffs...and stuff, scripts and a script editor, parallax mapping, adding a $ at the beginning of a file name lets you increase the size of your sprite based on your image size, and other things that aren't right there on the top of my head. And MV was a little bit of a let down, though it's got a lot of things that are better than VX Ace, but the stuff VX Ace is better at that MV isn't is pretty noticeable.
Anyway, welcome! Oh, and if you remove "author=" from the quote tags, it'll display our names alone.
I don't know about using a pirated version of an engine before buying a legit version. However, I would feel more comfortable with the VX Ace Lite suggestion, even with the myriad cypher limitations associated with it.
They won't learn shit though from the Lite version. The limitations are ridiculous and doesn't show off the program well at all.
We all of a sudden have problems with using a pirated rpg maker engine?

As a site, the pirated versions of 2K and 2K3 (which I have been calling TsuK and TsuK3 since the legal translation came out) are still on the engines list. I'm not sure what the official stance is on pirated copies of XP and up are, though. My best guess is an "don't ask, don't tell" kind of policy.
As for myself, I... have to think about that question.
*Edit: Though, for full disclosure, I do have games on my list that are made with TsuK and TsuK3.
I didn't mean to sound harsh or anything, Marrend.
I just think it's a decent suggestion because it's what I did. And at the time paid near full price for the engine with a lot of resource goodies added on.
I don't condone outright pirating the software, but if you want to test it out and legitimately want to use it then you should buy it as you get the option for commercial games and guilt free development lol
