STARDEW VALLEY

So, this game's pretty brilliant. After it gets things rolling it's pretty hard to quit. I don't want to go to work. ;-;
For me personally it's a very strong candidate of being the GotY considering I haven't been as hooked or charmed by any other game for a very long time.
If you haven't heard of the game yet, basically it's a spiritual successor to the Harvest Moon and Rune Factory series. You manage a farm, charm townspeople, adventure on the nearby fields and dungeons.
Stardew Valley has really strong core mechanics and controls and it gives you a lot of goals, but also offers a lot of freedom! For example, you can customize your character, house, and farm, and craft decorations alongside with tools and different foods, etc.
+ The grahpics of the game <3_<3
++ The OST is great.
Yeah, and it's all pretty much done by one person.
Oh yeah it's available in steam for $20 or something!

$15, which is a steal considering how many hours I've already put into this game. It's incredibly addictive and a lot of fun to boot!
If you like Rune Factory or Harvest Moon games (or farming sims and dating peeps and mining and fishing) then nab this. It's already the best $15 I've spent this year and I doubt it's going to be kicked off the top of that list.
...I may have it open and be playing it right now...
Oh, yeah, and there's modding coming in the future and the guy who created it (Concerned Ape) is really great when it comes to bugs and what-not - he's even offered to edit people's game files if something messes up so that they can keep enjoying the game. He also updates pretty often, adding new stuff/fixing bugs that pop up (it's really stable, actually. I've yet to see anything buggy bar a tiling error and I've been playing over 60 hours, so...). There's also a planned multiplayer component in the future.

Sometimes it feels so conflicting to be playing the game though, because it's inspiring as hell from an independent developer point of view, as well as from a viewpoint of someone who wants to compose music for games.
This game has some really great songs that break my heart while playing the game ;-;

It also has some pretty dark stuff, if you search the nooks and crannies of different peoples' lives. Some of it is told to you when you get closer to the person, some things you find out by checking out their rooms and poking your nose around. Jas's room, in particular, has some allusions to pretty dark stuff.
It handles it really well, though - the characters mention stuff and, just like real people, brush it off as 'oh, yeah, well, that's just you know, stuff' but it leaves an impression on you.
And yeah, the music is really well done, as are the atmospheric noises.
It's also different the different ways you can play it. Do you challenge yourself to not using crops at all? Maybe you play a lumber merchant or a fisherman? Do you allow yourself to purchase upgrades to your tools? Maybe you want to only make money on fruit trees? Or are you a monster killer? Miner? Do you support JojaMart or fight against them? Woo many or a few? Mix with the townies or become a hermit?

I am devoted to not make a single purchase from Joja. :D
Also, the second arcade game in the pub is going to creep into my nightmares. I've been trying to beat it in the hopes of achievement or some such.
Also, trying to challenge yourself by restricting yourself to some specific roles seems interesting, but I am enjoying all aspects way too much to give up on any of them. Same goes with the townspeople, though. It's going to be a tough pick to choose who to marry. I haven't decided between Abigail and Haley yet. Penny's there too, but to me she's just pretty, and not that interesting otherwise, while Abigail on the other hand...

I've chosen Leah for my first run. I like the cut of her jib~
Also, I've a second run where I'm supporting Joja 100%. I'm also being an evil asshole in it and totally shallow, going for only the best-looking/most assholish/conceited/snobby people (so basically Penny, because her mother supports JojaMart, Haley because hello trophy wife, Sebastian because he hates the town and Sam because he has dreams to be a rock star). In that one I only shop at Joja, and aim for big cash.
I'm also befriending the kids in the hope of inducting them into the Joja lifestyle. :D

Libby that sounds great! Maybe I will try out something like that if I ever start a new game when more updates roll in. Right now I feel super determined to complete this game 100% first though.
I don't know why this game has such a huge impact on me, but I am getting pretty fanatic about it. Bought the OST and I'm looking into ordering a couple of T-shirts. :D
And yeah Craze, I'd be easily willing to pay double or triple the price of this game, and actually even a lot more.
ps. I wouldn't really be able to stand another best friend called Sam, though. x) And I'm still hoping to get a bit more out of Haley, other than her slightly growing notions towards charity.
