[RM2K3] GAME PROTECTION

Posts

I've been using RM2K3 for a long time and I used to have a program that could corrupt the tree map data of the game so others couldn't open my game with rpg maker. I changed pc and now I don't have it anymore. I searched on Google but couldn't find it anywhere. Does anybody know another way of protecting my game? I don't care for the resources that much, I just don't want people to be able to change the game.
...just let people change the game. If they're looking to change the game it means you stuffed up somewhere with the eventing or balance. Most people don't bother opening a game unless they're stuck. I know that's the only reason I've ever bothered to open a game.

Honestly, though, what harm does it do you to let them edit the gameplay in a way to make it easier for them to pass the game? Shouldn't you want them to be able to see the end of your game and get the full experience? The only issue would be if they were to then re-upload it online, but people tend to play then delete, so... where's the issue? I mean, you did say you don't care about the resources, so it's not a big deal if they just mess around with the game itself as long as they don't share it. :/

I never liked easy games and I never enjoyed games that I could simply hack and make it to the end by making my characters overpowered. I believe that opening the game and looking inside spoils the experience of the game. But maybe it's only my point of view... If I don't find a way to encrypt the game then it's ok, I'll still upload it.
That's the thing, though - different players appreciate different things. If they play your game and they get stuck because they find it too hard, they'll eventually just give up and never finish playing your game, especially if they just want to edit the HP or Attack of a blockage boss to get on with the story. There's nothing more annoying than a good game that you get stuck on because of a monster that won't die. I know from experience that when that happens, if I can't get past a boss after two or three tries (depending on how the game is set up, of course) I'll edit that shit to let me past. If I can't do that... there's literally thousands more games out there to play instead.
Yeah I never liked it when I couldn't open a game, and especially today's RPG maker games. If I wanted to replace a song (that is the same song, but better) then I would like that option, somebody out there finally did remixes for the rm2k songs which are alot better. Sometimes I wanted to open up a game if I was stuck or there was game-breaking bug that didn't allow me to go any further. Other times there is content that is leftover that is not normally accessible (which I experienced when playing Dragon Fantasy), and it fascinates people like me on what "could have been".
@BluePhoenix: An actual answer to your question... Enigma Virtual Box. MoleBox was probably the one your thinking of, but it's not that reliable. See my post about it here:

My opinion about the matter is that if it's your game that you spend hundreds of hours on, you should be able to protect its resources if you want to. What other people say or want about the matter is kind of irrelevant. If they want to change things or rip resources that badly, let them struggle. :)

Yeah, but at the end of the day it is their game. If they want to keep people from messing with it, then they have that right. Whether it's a good or bad design choice doesn't really matter, so long as it's what the designer of the game wants.

Wow, that software sounds super useful for other kinds of things.

Like, my game folder usually looks like this and it looks messy and people not used to computers might click something they shouldn't or remove files when they shouldn't and this tool would help greatly.

Yeah you can pretty much pack it any way you want to, ultimately. I don't think dlls are that big of a deal though. With 2k/2k3 games, you basically have like 10 folders with XX number of resources, and hundreds of map files, so it's more for trimming that type of thing down to 1 or 2 files. I'm assuming there's a lot of stuff in that resource folder, so you could basically turn that into a resource.*** file using Enigma.

You could take it a step further and create an installer/shortcut (which would make people bitch even more), and if they break the game somehow by deleting files they're not supposed to, it's kind of on them. So I wouldn't worry about that aspect of it too much.
