COMPUTER ISSUES?

Hmm...so I decided that I was going to play Melee tonight since I was bored, right? But while playing, my computer shut itself off entirely. I turned it back on, ran CoreTemp, and found out that the temperature for some reason was at 102 degrees. Normally, when running Dolphin, it's about 80 degrees or so. When I tried running it again, it started climbing into the 90s. Same with PCX2. I opened the case to check the fans while running these, and the fans are all running (there's 3 of them in there and they were all moving, so it shouldn't have been the fans), and I'm pretty sure it doesn't need cleaned out yet. Probably wouldn't hurt, but could it be possible that the cooling unit is somehow going bad now? Or that it would need new thermal paste (it was applied 2 years ago, so I wouldn't think it'd NEED it...but you never know)? When not running anything like those, its at its normal temperature of about 40-60 degrees, varying.

I also ran PPSSPP and it ran about 50 degrees or so with KHBBS and Crisis Core, so...I don't know. I know PCSX2 and Dolphin are more intensive and whatnot, but they NEVER ran that high before.

(On a sidenote, wonder if it'd be worth having a stickied thread just for computer/technology related stuff??)

Just in case, I'll mention that you should keep it clean.

You could try fresh thermal paste, but you'll have to do that anyway if you follow my suggestion: 20 dollars will get you a freon cooler. I recommend it highly. It mounts in place of the processor fan, has its own fan, and cools your processor so you never have to worry about it again.

What kind of computer do you have? I had an issue with my Dell where some of the Dell processes that run in the background decided to one day begin consuming all available processor power and caused it to overheat and the computer to turn off. Long story short, opened up Services and set them all to Manual instead of Automatic. No more overheating issues.
Something's gone awry with your CPU heatsink or mounting. Reseat or replace it like pianotm said, and look up the proper application of thermal paste because some people apply glops of it which fucks up the heat transference.

e: although personally I'd stick with air cooled systems instead of something like freon. I'm surprised they came down in price to $20 though. I've never looked hard into computer cooling myself so I'm fairly ignorant on that front.

Freon coolers don't get AC cold. It's just a freon coil with a fan attached to it. It gets colder than an air cooler would, but not freezing. I have one in my computer. It's really not a complicated thing.
@pianotm: Yeah, I know about keeping it clean. It's only been about 2 months since I last cleaned it out with a can of air, need to get more. It probably does have a bit of dust. I opened it up while running the emulator to check the fans, and one of them does seem to have a lot of dust (the main one in the center, not the two in the back of the case). Never heard of a freon cooler though, huh. I've never actually taken out nor replaced anything on this thing outside the RAM and HDD (thing is about 8 years old, so it's probably just showing its age now).

@GreatRedSpirit: It was applied about...2 years ago or so? Maybe even less than that, so it hasn't been TOO terribly long since it was last put on. And from what I know, it...shouldn't NEED to be applied that much, if at all. And the kicker is, it only happens with those two emus. I know they're both pretty extensive on the CPU, but I've never seen it get to 90-100 before except when I first got this comp and didn't have thermal paste reapplied (doing anything back then caused this thing to want to die hue). Makes me worried that I won't be able to use my Camtasia Studio for converting videos, now that I think about it. Ho boy...

Those emus may be causing the processor to overclock. May want to check their settings, if you can.
I've never heard of freon coolers before, sounds like I incorrectly threw them in the same pile as water coolers! My bad. I'll have to remember to look into them when I upgrade my computer next.

Xenomic: Yeah, a dab or so of thermal paste is correct. It exists to fill in tiny air gaps between the cpu shell and the cooler. It's unfortunate it only lasted two years though, maybe one of the cooler pins or mounting bracket got snapped out of position somehow?

Your computer should still be functional for encoding: The CPU is aware of it's own temperature and will clock down hard when it hits certain thermal thresholds and it isn't good for the health of the CPU to stay hot for long. Watch your usage still though. If it has to shut itself off then it's because it's still overheating while clocked down which is a bit more dire. Make sure your fans are pointed the right way too: Fans on the front should be pushing air in and fans on the back should be pushing it out. iirc I use a sheet of paper to see if it's getting blow away or not to tell which way the fans are blowing.

It sucks because reseating/replacing the heat sink is one of the most case-intensive tasks for a computer, good luck fixing it!
Yeah, I just tested out ePSXe with FFVII and recording, and temp NEVER really went above 50 degrees so it has to be those two emus somehow with their settings. Not sure what the settings could be that's causing it but yeah (although my ePSXe settings aren't exactly optimized either. I'm still trying to fix issues with that hue). Which sucks because I have them perfectly set to run as normal, just...they cause so much overheating hue. >_<

I'll find out about the encoding whenever I manage to get this video for FFVII done. Just...gotta fix the settings first hue. >_<
Well fawk me, I'm right back in the same situation I was before. Seems I can't even convert videos now without it hitting 100 degrees. : |
It's normal to have problems with the computer, me, for example, I work with computers and I was fed up with getting stuck. I decided to do something and I started to search the Internet for a possible solution. Then I discovered GAMMAK. I found a website that helped me detect the possible problems that the websites or servers I was using might have. I recommend it very much and hope you put it to good use.
Greetings
