Usually the offending threads have fairly innocent names though. I see the "What are you thinking about" thread every day and I know that it's full of hateful garbage but the name is such sweet innocence. (EDIT: and I click it about once a month and see that yes, it is indeed full of garbage)

The point is not "magically predict which threads will be bad," the point is, "once I realize a thread is bad, I don't have to be reminded of it."

Personally, I haven't had much issue with ignoring topics that I don't intend on participating in, but responses in this thread gave me a better understanding why this would be a good idea. I'm thinking along the lines of, "Well, if we can ignore users, ignoring topics seems to make just as much sense."
So yeah, I'd be fine with seeing this implemented so long as it's on a personal scale and not site-wide.

I am being contrarian just for the sake of being contrarian. I just think an ignore topic or hide forum thingie is kinda silly. It's incredibly easy to just not click on every topic. And if it isn't how much of a difference does the button that says "You have chosen to ignore this topic, view it anyway?" really do?

Maybe if you don't have a mental illness that involves obsessive tendencies it is.
This would be an awesome idea. Even better if we could set up an ignore filter so we can automatically hide any threads containing those words in the title.
I'm not on the technical side of this nor the one doing the actual work behind the scenes, but what does it hurt to have it? Would it be difficult?
By the same reasoning, ignore isn't an end all. And it shouldn't be.
But if someone doesn't want to see something or someone then they have the option to turn that thing off from sight. It would be on them to go back and undo it and get into it with a user or a discussion.

Honestly, I think it's a possible good idea. The only thing is that I'd like a mod override for threads that are marked as Important (news for site-based stuff and changes, for example).

Ideally people should get assistance so that they don't need facilitators to perform normally, but i do know how difficult that damn feeling of curiosity burns when you already had a taste of the bad times present in a thread, so it is a nice idea.

I think this is a great idea. We can also get rid of the latest posts block on mafia this way. If people don't want to see mafia, they can just ignore the mafia thread, but the mafia posts will still be in latest posts for those who want them to be there.

TBH I feel like mafia goes so fast the latest posts widget isn't terribly helpful for it. When I played, I'd just keep a tab open and refresh it now and then.
If I can reiterate here, I don't mind mafia since I like to play and even read/watch when I'm not in the current game but when you go to the latest posts feed and there's gigantic blocks of posts to mafia I can see why people can still be upset even with the new flags in place. It really does just drown out other things. And it can be annoying to dig through 2 or 3 pages because of mafia posts.
edit here: my point being here is that if you simply ignore it gets rid of that upset.
I also want to note this wasn't because of mafia (obviously from my original status comment) It is just a nice option all around for anyone and anything.
