Retro but you have to be super faithful to the programming and writing of the time, so it's shitty localization and vague writing paired with bad mechanics.

I'm going to be disappointed in any retro game that doesn't have a stat that isn't totally useless and/or hilariously bugged. Also character names longer than 4 letters long.

I'm going to have a guy named Kung Fu who has mastered the art of Kung Fu from the distant land of Chūgohon, except all the martial art attacks will be named after Muai Thai techniques

If I did retro I wouldn't purposely have bad elements from the old ones. You can be retro and improve upon what the originals were!

The problem is, that's what most of the site makes anyway. It's like "HEY, IT'S OUR BIRTHDAY! LET'S DO NOTHING DIFFERENT TO CELEBRATE!!!"

(Password systems and mono sound is where I'd draw the line for making a "retro" game. I played and beat Faxanadu when I was a kid, and that was the NA version where the font was kinda stylized and password letters could sure look like another letter. I paid my RPG Password Tax and by jove never again! I AM FREE FROM INJURY BECAUSE OF THE OINTMENT!)

Faxanadu is one of the coolest RPGs ever. So good.

Is there a ready-built engine thats good for first-person rpgs like MM3-5? Cause if so...thats awesome and I want it. Although making a good, complex rpg like that would be near impossible in 10 days lol.

I like how Ultima 4 which also had the same keyboard inputs and layout as U5 if you hit 'A' to attack and realized you made a mistake there was no way to go back. Even if you made an invalid input you would just lose your turn.


Even using magic was a chore. Let's look at the Cure Poison spell! Except in U5 lingo it's An Nox (Negate Poison). You just can't cast spells, you gotta prepare it first! So you hit M to Mix and it asks you for a spell so you hit AN for An Nox (each magic word starts with its own letter at least). Then it asks you what you want to mix! You either have to memorize the components for each spell or check your manual / reference card (or notes for spells you found ingame). In this case it's ginseng and garlic, pick those from your ingredients menu. Then how many do you mix, and let me tell you you mix a lot of An Nox in the course of playing U5.

Great, you prepared 99 uses of An Nox! Now next time you wander into a swamp and Iolo gets poisoned again you simple hit C to Cast Spell, hit AN for An Nox, specify the Avatar is the one casting, and bam! You cast An Nox! Unless you didn't have enough MP, or ran out of An Nox (which is all the time). e: Also don't forget the only way to check your current MP is to check your Ztats. The main window just shows CharacterName Status CurrentHP. /e:

If it was U4 you'd probably lose your turn too. Except you want to be poisoned because poison damage doesn't tick in dungeons and while poisoned you can't be hit with something worse, like Sleep! Getting poisoned then wandering into dungeons was an Ultima 4 prostrat so when you fight eight Ropers spamming their sleep party attack you'd just say "heh, not today vile cretins of the abyss! I'm poisoned! I can't be put to magical sleep!" and then murder them all and hole up and camp to recover HP because you can still do regular sleep while poisoned.


Except recovering HP while camping is random! It's possible to hole up for 9 hours of rest and nobody recovers any HP! Also you can get attacked! I hope you specified somebody to stay awake and stand watch because otherwise you're gonna get in a fight with ten slimes that'll eat you alive while your entire party restfully sleeps recovering zero HP.

Hooray for retro game mechanics!

Maybe not Might and Magic, per say, but, yes. I might even still have a copy of that, somewhere. I know I joked about doing something in this engine when the No RPG Maker Event came about!
