SOME QUESTIONS FOR THE MUSICIANS FROM AN AMATEUR...

At the moment I'm making my own soundtracks for my projects and I used Music Studio 2.0 on iOS. However, there do seem to have a few problems with the results. So here's a few questions for musicians (I'm still very much amateur so sorry if any of these sound stupid):

-I'm using RMXP for my projects, which only recognizes wav, midi, MP3, and ogg. Typically I've converted the soundtracks to MP3 version, and with a few tracks the file size shoots up really quickly... I heard OGG files are smaller but have some issue involving loading files (?) So which format (aside from MIDI) do people typically use/request, and what is a good balance for the size and ST quality, and is there any other factors to be considered?

-it seems that there is NO WAY for the soundtracks to loop seamlessly properly in RMXP unless it was in MIDI format. I've tried to make MIDI tracks with Music Studio, however, it doesn't have a good MIDI preview (there is a HUGE discrepancy between the instruments heard in the app and the ones played on PC). Is there a good composing/midi software that I can try have a look?

Thanks :)

Yeah, apparently RMXP doesn't support streaming (meaning it has to load the whole file before playing) for OGG, but does for MP3. Which is kinda weird, I feel like that goes the opposite way with some other programs. WMA is another audio format that XP supports (w/ streaming), just fyi.

Honestly, last time I worked on an RMXP game (10 years ago, so take this with some salt), I didn't have a problem with any of my music, which I generally made as 1.5~2.5 minute loops in OGG format, so it's probably OK use it unless you're composing entire concertos? Should be noted that if you make your audio files right, OGG, and probably WMA files will loop seamlessly. MP3's won't though (I think the metadata is stored as a blip of near-silence at the end of the audio stream). And of course, neither will have options for loop points like w/ MIDI.
Unfortunately I'm not involved enough in the RM scene to answer your other questions.

As for software, I don't know of anything for iOS. We had a music event here several years ago, and some of us there dropped a lot of freebie music software links, so there might be something in there you can use:

As for the discrepancy b/w your program's MIDI preview and XP's MIDI playback, if the program supports SoundFonts, you can try looking up gm.sf2 or Scc1t2.sf2 and using those. Neither of them are an exact match to the DirectX synthesizer (what XP's MIDI playback uses), but are at least 99% there (minus XP's grody DirectX Reverb and Chorus FX).

It's been many years since i used XP, but if i recall correctly you can use .ogg files with loop points and the file will generally work. Unless your file is big, RPG XP won't have troubled loading it, even with it's issues involving .ogg files.

Here's a tutorial i made that teaches you how to add loop points to your ogg files using Audacity.

Once you export your track to .ogg and if you feel the filesize is still too big, you can open it with audacity and reduce the tracks quality until the file weighs at least 50% less, with minimal audio quality loss, experiment with bitrates and if you can afford it turn your tracks to a mono channel as well, leaving the stereo channel for tracks who really need it.
Sorry Mirak, that feature was introduced in VX.
Trust me, I would've really loved audio loop points when I was working on my XP game back then!
Though I guess it's possible that someone has written a script for it by now.
Thanks turkeyDawg and Mirak for taking the time providing answers to the questions, those are really helpful. :)

Most of my soundtracks are not longer than 1.5 minutes, so I guess I can give OGG a try. I'll have a look on the softwares suggested. Doesn't have to be iOS, really, I tend to stick with PC for softwares, just that a close friend of mine just happened to have bought the whole package on iOS, which I get to free-ride on, plus the app felt kind of convenient to use (and I have no prior experience with any other music softwares).

Some of the features of the newer RMs sounds really nice and I really hope I can upgrade to a newer version of RM, except I felt kind of reluctant to move since I've invested a lot of time on XP already and it really took me forever to get used to a lot of the features -_-||| (slow learner). I'll give a try looking for the scripts.

If you have the possibility of moving forward i'd reccommend VX Ace.

Alright. Thanks for the recommendation and I'll have a look when I have the time.
