I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've learned it's based on a comic that Star Wars was based on (cool scenes, creative aliens, and even the bad dialog!). It is floundering hard in cinemas though, unfortunately. I still want to see it eventually.

I thought It was a sequel to The Fifth Element.

Well, the comic is called 'Valerian'. It's a movie adaptation of the world the comic is based in. Not sure if it is a specific comic or story from it, or if it is a new story. I honestly know very little about it.

e: I am being overly harsh on recycled content like this though, I've never heard of Valerian and it isn't a return of 80/90's cartoon shit like all the Smurfs movies at least.

It's a french comic so thats why its not super well known! One of my professors (who is french) was really excited for the movie since he read the comics growing up. He was hugely disappointed by the film.

Are movies based on comics or games really ever that great, though? :(

Some turn out rather well; like any adaptation, it requires a familiarity with what makes the material great, and an ability to make a good whatever-thing-you're-making.

Too often adaptations are either overly slavish to their origins (to the point of keeping in stuff that doesn't work in the new medium), or the makers just don't give a single fuck, and are focused on just plugging names into a generic movie template. (Business as usual in big studios, where the people holding the purse strings insist that the Video Game Crowd only want action movies.)

ETA: I think the early Marvelverse movies worked very well, actually. Later ones, not so much, since they're hamstrung by "GUYS WE NEED TO SET UP EIGHTY OTHER PLOTLINES THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW BUT CONTINUITY!!!!"

The only good X-Men movie is Deadpool. X-Men is not part of the MCU because Fox wants to be a bunch of dicks instead of playing well with others.

I kinda really hate what Deadpool became, since I first followed him from New Mutants into X-Force. And for whatever reason people sucked his nuts and followed him alone from those series. I just generally look down on people who like him.

A certain segment of the population just really, really likes stuff that breaks the fourth wall. Also irreverent humor.

I rather like Deadpool, myself, mostly because he's a big gross loser a lot of the time.

Wasn't Cable a terrible, one-note character most of the time?

Possibly growing up during the Dark Age has tinged my opinion.

I didn't think so, of only for his past and FUTURE >.> Sorry, that's lame.

And maybe I have nostalgia glasses on, but I always liked him. Like piano said, he was kinda Jean Grey, kinda Cyclops, Wolverine etc etc But I don't think it hurt his character. He actually became somewhat of an active leader for X-Force.
