[RM2K3] INTENSE LAG AND SLOWDOWN

Over the past six months, I’ve started to encounter a considerable “lag” and slowdown while playtesting my game in RM2k3. When it happens, the FPS rate dips so low, that some of the maps even become unplayable. At first I thought it was just my laptop/hard drive storage, but even after resetting Windows, the problem persisted.
The strange part is, I don’t think the lag is resulting from any complex Common Events or parallel process code, because most of these maps never previously had any issue. The maps are admittedly detailed/with numerous animations - but there’s nothing theoretically that should be game-breaking to this extent.
Has anyone who still uses (or previously used) 2k3 encountered this issue? It doesn’t happen it battles, ironically enough.
The maps do use:
- Lots of high file-size WAV ambient sounds
- Pictures scrolling
- Moving-animated events
There are also a lot of unused MP3s in my project folder, so perhaps that’s contributing to it somehow? Could the DynRPG patches be a factor? Etc. This is the “Tsukuru” version if that matters.
Hoping to find some way to minimize the problem.

Disable things one by one until it stops lagging. Examine what you turned off.
You could then try disabling different events to see the result.
You might find one that has a code error, no wait, or something looping that shouldn't. Or it might be that you reached some data threshold, where you are simply doing too much.
But ya, first try it on multiple computers to be sure.
You could maybe add proximity detection and only run animation events that are close enough to the hero to even be visible on screen. It would cut down on needless processing.

A lot of high file-size AVI ambient soundsWhat do you mean here? AVI is a movie format.

Good advice.
Yeah, I'm thinking that may be it, or it has something to do with my GPU.
My testers mentioned there was *some* lag, but nothing as crazy as I'm experiencing. XD It's just weird how badly Rm2k3 runs on newer machines, when 5-8 years ago the problem was nonexistent.

Yeah, computer architecture is very different to hardware from 8 years ago. Most programs tend to run worse as hardware improves simply because they cant take advantage of newer hardware and it leads to bottlenecks. Super heavy MV games maintain a smooth 60fps on my rig but games like OFF and the demo for Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass run horribly.

This is good to know, thank you for pointing this out!
This is really hard to diagnose without having something to test out or read through. One random thought I had is if your program is reading/writing files ever off the hard drive, since non-solid-state hard drives are the slowest things on modern computers, and constantly reading and writing such things (ESPECIALLY with virus software running) would definitely kill performance. If your computer somehow runs out of RAM, that would also force reading/writing to the hard drive, though I can't imagine that's your problem.
Without seeing it firsthand (again) my guess would be the large .wavs. Because they're completely uncompressed sound a lot of modern sound drivers (which are optimized for modern file types) aren't predisposed to running them well. Effectively, they have to load ~10mb files instantly and, since I know a lot of your maps use lots of ambience, repeatedly. That can put a lot of strain on your GPU (which is probably processing sound as well).
The animated events likely aren't the culprit, and as long as you have 0.0 waits on your pictures they shouldn't give you issues either. Try replacing the .wavs with very small ones temporarily and see if that helps.
If the game is stuttering it's even more likely that it's the wavs. If it's just dropping the frame rate to an unacceptable speed it's less likely. Try deleting (or just moving) those mp3s- I don't know why extra files would be slowing down the game, but it's possible your Windows search indexer is struggling with the large number of files.
