I was wondering if there was a way to emulate the Heat status from FF9/Air Anchor from FF6 where a skill or item applies a state where if the afflicted takes any action, they die (with the exception of bosses). Essentially, I would like this also to affect the player if they select the "Attack" or use any physical ability.
I am using Yanfly's Buff & States Core, but can't quite figure out how to get the scripting to work using the Lunatic option when an action is selected.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Looks like you want the <Custom Action Start Event>, or <Custom Action End Event>.
I think you'll have to pull the action out of BattleManager._action, as it's not in scope of the function call.
